The following stories made the news in the Valley 50 and 25 years ago, as found in the Snoqualmie Valley Record archives:

January 5, 1989

• Grace Anderson brightened the holidays for many “street people” in Seattle. A resident of the North Bend Nursing Center, she delivered 120 hand-made scarves to the First Avenue Service Center.

• The Washington State Library is seeking old newspapers from the Valley for micofilming. Sought are copies of the North Bend and Snoqualmie Post, and the Valley Record. Also requested: the Carnation Enterprise from 1912 to 1918 and 1929 to 1930, the Carnivall Reporter for 1964 and ’65, the Duvall Citizen from 1917, the Tolt Enterprise from 1912 to 1916 and 1918 to 1929, plus any issues of the Snoqualmie Valley Herald.

Jan. 9, 1964

• Steve Barnhart, 12, helped his three sisters escape from a blazing house near Duvall. Their parents were out, the mother having car trouble on her way to pick up their father, a cab driver. A faulty oil heater caused the blaze, at around 2 a.m. Steve escaped out the back door, then instructed 11-year-old Karen to help 10-year-old Lydia and six-year-old Debra out of their bedroom window, then jump herself.

• Miss Marily Murphy, granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. Owen Terhune of Meadowbrook, shared a first-hand report on her life and work in the Peace Corps in Vietnam. She experienced the coup and assassination of President Diem, Buddhist uprisings, her work in a surgical hospital, went shrimp fishing, and shared her thoughts on the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
