Members of the AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps will go door to door in Carnation this weekend, seeking food donations for the Hopelink food bank.

The drive is 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 5.

The next day, a team from AmeriCorps will meet with students at Carnation Elementary in a lesson about the value of service learning and sustainable living. Students will learn about the environmental work the group has been doing in King County, organic and inorganic decomposition and the importance of proper trash disposal.

“We are excited to work with the students and get to know the next generation of service-minded individuals in the Carnation community,” said NCCC member Kelsey Jones of Columbus, Ohio.

AmeriCorps NCCC is part of AmeriCorps, a network of national service programs created to improve the environment, enhance education, increase public safety, and assist with disaster relief and other unmet human needs.

AmeriCorps members must complete at least 1,700 hours of service during the 10-month program. In exchange for their service, they receive $5,500 to help pay for college or to pay school loans. Learn more at www.americorps.gov/nccc.
