Community needs to look at all options for wildfire prevention | Letter

A big thank you to the Firewise Communities Program and Fall City Fire Chief Chris Connor for taking the initiative to protect our communities from the dangers of life-threatening wildfires. This kind of future-focused strategy is exactly the kind of leadership we need to protect ourselves from the increasing severity of wildfires.

We as a community can take one more step in the direction of wildfire prevention by limiting the amount of heat-trapping carbon we release into the air that has fueled the increase in wildfires in the Northwest.

Our very own representative, David Reichert is co-sponsoring a resolution that recognizes the increase in extreme weather events including wildfires, and calls on the House to “study and address the causes and effects of measured changes to our global and regional climates.”

The non-partisan Citizens Climate Lobby applauds Rep. Reichert for this resolution and hopes that he will also co-sponsor a resolution calling for market-friendly fee on the fossil fuel industry to make these corporations pay for their own pollution with every penny of that fee paid back to American households.

We must enlist all available options to prevent wildfires. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
