Cartoon misses the mark | Letter to the editor

About that cartoon

As I read yesterday’s Valley Record, Frank Shiers Jr.’s cartoon once again grated on my nerves as unnecessarily provocative in this troubled and contentious time in our nation. Admittedly, Shiers’ point of view tends to counterpoint Robert Whale’s editorials, but Whale is thoughtful while Shiers is reactionary. Yesterday’s cartoon really stuck in my craw.

My wife and I attend protests. Not only don’t we wear the gear shown on the right of the cartoon, but opposed to the old school protester on the left, we are short haired, clean shaven and don’t wear peace symbols. We, and most of our fellow protesters, look like our attached picture.

Why don’t you dump Shiers and find a substitute who can pen something light hearted instead of prejudicial and polarizing? Our community doesn’t need that right now.
