Part of Jay St. Charles’ job is to find the longbows growing within trees. Another part is to help people discover their inner archers. The best part, though, is probably when the two are combined, in day-long archery workshops hosted at his Fall City studio.

St. Charles is officially a bow maker, selling high-end customized longbows and recurve bows to online customers throughout the world.

The new year brought new law enforcement to Carnation and city officials couldn’t be happier with the transition.
“It’s gone remarkably well,” said Carnation City Manager Ken Carter last week. “What we did in three months, normally takes nine.”

When Kathy Lambert packs her bags for a trip to Kenya later this month, she’s not likely to forget a toothbrush—or makeup. These items have earned prominent places in the District 3 King County Council representative’s memory both from her previous trip to Kenya, three years ago.

The toothbrushes, possibly hundreds of them, are destined for women and children suffering from AIDS and living in the slums of Nairobi. When Lambert met some of them on a mission trip with WorldComp Kenya in 2011, she was saddened by how bad their teeth were.

A court ruled in their favor, but the North Bend property owners who successfully appealed their sewer assessments may have won the issue in principle only.

The Washington Court of Appeals annulled the city’s sewer assessments on several parcels of land in North Bend’s Utility Local Improvement District #6 (Tanner ULID) in an Oct. 21 opinion, claiming the city erred in changing the sewer system design without adopting a new ordinance. However, it also stated that the annulment would allow the city to reassess those properties.

As schools closed down for the holidays, two groups of employees in the Snoqualmie Valley School District were still employed under the terms of expired contracts.

Both the Public School Employees (PSE) and the Snoqualmie Valley Administrative Secretaries Association (SVASA) unions have been in negotiations with the district bargaining team off and on since last spring.

Lean times for the city of Carnation have led to a cut in police services for 2014, but also a small bit of good news. Thanks to cost savings from the reduced police contract, Carnation residents won’t be asked to pay an additional $20 fee for car tabs next year.

Carnation’s City Council on Dec. 3 approved a $500,000 police contract with the King County Sheriff’s Office, for one full-time officer in the city, plus shared-patrol coverage during the officer’s off hours.

Food banks in the Snoqualmie Valley have seen steady increases in community need over the past few years. Carnation’s Hopelink may see another jump soon, when the Snoqualmie Tribe Food Bank, also in Carnation, closes its doors.

The Snoqualmie Tribe in November began the process of withdrawing its support of the Carnation food bank by the end of this year.

Ready to spend another $110,000 annually, North Bend is doing its part to keep the tenuous partnership of Eastside Fire & Rescue members together.

In a series of meetings, the North Bend City Council has acted in support of keeping the city of Sammamish in their shared seven-year fire protection partnership, despite the increased costs it will mean for the city. In a vote at their Nov. 5 meeting, council members approved a new funding model that could cost the city $110,000 more annually.

Both medical and recreational marijuana are legal in Washington now, but not in North Bend. City officials and staff here have deferred the needed updates to North Bend’s zoning, licensing and taxing regulations while awaiting the final rules from the state Liquor Control Board, which will regulate the drug.

A moratorium on the establishment of any medical marijuana dispensaries or collective gardens has been in effect since June, 2011, in North Bend.
