Track and field teams move on to district

Mount Si boasted some impressive efforts at the KingCo Conference track-and-field tournament held at Issaquah High School last week. The girls’ team placed fourth overall, and the boys’ team took sixth, with two athletes being named event champions.
Nick Verbon claimed three titles, winning the 110-meter high hurdles in 14.51 seconds, the 300-meter hurdles in 39.73 seconds and taking first in the long jump.
For the girls, Piper Sherbon broke her own school record and won the triple jump with a leap of 36 feet, 2 1/4 inches to claim the title.
Others qualifying for the district meet were Jim Daughtrey, who placed fourth in the 200 meters. The team of Verbon, Daughtrey, Brady Barry and Kai Miyamoto took fourth in the 4×100-meter relay to qualify for district.
Kristen Berndt placed second in the javelin with a throw of 112 feet, 9 inches and fourth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.6 seconds. Teammate Carie Frantz place fifth in the pole vault at 8 feet, and Catlin Braun took fourth in the shot put with a throw of 33 feet, 7 inches.
Ashley VanOeveren placed third in the shot put with a toss of 33 feet, 7 1/4 inches.
Others competing at the league meet were Lauren Paulus, who took seventh in the triple jump with a distance of 29 feet, 11 inches, and the 4×100 relay team of Berndt, Kelly Fletcher, Meaghan Dunklee and Whitney Chelgren, which placed sixth.
For the boys, Brian Lewis cleared 5 feet, 10 inches for a seventh-place finish in the high jump.
In junior-varsity action, Alex Grazda won the javelin and high jump, while Barry took third in the 100-meter dash. Andrew McPherren placed fourth in the 300-meter hurdles and seventh in the 400-meter run.
Alex Hennig placed second in the pole vault, with A.J. Frye placing third and Mike Montgomery placing sixth in the same event.
Ryan McKinstry placed third in the shot put and discus, while Daughtrey placed second in the discus.
For the boys, the 4×100 relay team, Verbon and Daughtrey will advance to the district meet. Five girls will advance to the district meet.
