MERCER ISLAND – Mount Si, Cedarcrest and Mercer Island battled each other in a three-team meet at Mercer Island last Thursday, and both Valley squads came away winners. Cedarcrest won the girls’ meet by racking up 86 points and taking 10 of 17 events. Mount Si followed with 58 points and Mercer Island had 40.

In the boys’ competition, Mount Si beat both Mercer Island and Cedarcrest, earning 81 points to the 46.5 scored by both the Islanders and Red Wolves.

Cedarcrest’s girls dominated the opening five events, placing first in each. Jamie Brooks won the 100-meter with a time of 12.8 seconds; Erin Kendig won the 200-meter and 400-meter with times of 26.9 seconds and 60 seconds; and Kelly Ramirez won the mile in 5:19.5.

Ramirez led the entire race and gradually widened the gap between herself and Jessica Scalzo of Mount Si. Scalzo eventually placed second with a time of 5:28. Ramirez said the pace started out fast, but that her strategy was to go faster each lap and not slow down.

“The first lap was the fastest. It was like a 75 or 74 [seconds]. It was really fast,” Ramirez said, adding that she hopes to better her time in the future.

“I kind of want to get down to 5:10,” she said. “We’re starting faster speed workouts [in the coming weeks.]”

The Red Wolves also led in all of the relays, taking first place in the 4×100-meter, 4×200 and 4×400. In the boys’ competition, Mount Si captured seven first-place finishes, including Eddie Horstman’s time of 23.8 seconds in the 200-meter and Dan Barry’s time of 52.6 seconds in the 400-meter race.

In the 300-meter high hurdles, Nick Verbon took first with a time of 42.5 seconds, and because of a technicality, took second in the 110-meter high hurdles behind Islander David Kirtman. Verbon finished with a time of 15.1 seconds, one-tenth of a second behind Kirtman.

Mount Si sprinted around the track in 44.6 seconds to win the 4×100 relay, run by Kai Miyamoto, Dan Barry, Todd Barry and Horstman. The Wildcats’ 4×400 relay team nabbed the top spot with a time of 3:46.
