The Eagles jumped out to a 7-0 lead at the end of the first

Alina Plavsky led the team’s second-half effort, finishing with

six points. Collette Hatch, Amy Whitney, and Kali Walker denied any chance

of a Chief Kanim comeback with their defense.

The leading scorers for the Eagles were Potoshnik with nine points

and Plavsky with six.

Last Wednesday the seventh-grade Eagles faced a tough Pine Lake

team. The Eagles came up short, losing 28-16.

Once again the Eagles went to their strength in the middle

points. Amy Whitney provided a big spark in the second quarter when she stole

a pass and raced to the basket for two.

The Chief Kanim eighth-grade girls’ basketball team played a

tough Maywood team last week but came up short in the end, losing 36-28.

Scoring for the Hawks were Brittany Heaps with five,

Lauren McConkey with 18, Shannon Posey with three and Emily White with

two. McConkey led the team in steals with six, and Posey led in rebounds

with seven.

McConkey was selected as the offensive player of the game, and

Marie Will was selected as the defensive player of the game. Stacy Smith

and Amy Stauch were selected best off the bench.

“We continue to improve,” said coach Dick Kirby. “We were

much more competitive than the last time we played them. We got good help

from the bench and outstanding play from Lauren McConkey, as well as

great defense.”

Tolt sweeps Beaver Lake

The Tolt Thunderbirds eighth-grade girls’ basketball team

traveled to the Plateau Wednesday and came home with a nice 42-32 victory

against Beaver Lake.

The team came out a bit sluggish but slowly built a comfortable

21-9 lead by halftime, thanks to the efforts of a good second-quarter run.

Beaver Lake then proceeded to outscore the visiting Tolt team 12-5 in the

third, cutting the deficit to five points by the end of the quarter.

In the decisive final quarter, Tolt, led by a guard tandem of

Betsy Westerman and Ali Williams, cruised to victory with a 16-4 run.

“Beaver Lake had two or three very good, quick guards that gave

us fits all day long,” said coach Vern Hough. “But Ali and Betsy are

very talented, physical and competitive players. They lead their teammates

by example.

“The harder they play, the more intense the team gets and good

things happen. It’s fun to watch and was a great victory with contributions

by everyone,” he added.

Diane McKenney scored six points and added six boards, three

assists and two blocked shots. Monica Williams, Kelsi Colton and

Anne Sloate played good defense. Monica had four points including a

buzzer-beating jumper to end the game. Colton hauled in an impressive

nine rebounds and added three steals. Westerman recorded her first

double-double this year with 12 points, 10 rebounds, and five steals. Williams

Coomer, Shasta Waltz, Karen Lawton and Shadow Smith all chipped in

two apiece.

Outstanding defensive play for the T-birds came from Elyce

Anderson, Emily Oakes and Kenya Marshall.

The game was tight until the fourth quarter, as Tolt took an

eight-point lead and held off the hustling Bulldogs.

“It was a good game in that most players got a lot of playing time

and we were able to get the win,” said coach Jolene Anderson.
