Eighth-grade girls’ team nabs wins

The Snoqualmie Middle School eighth-grade girls’ varsity

basketball team posted two victories this past week, improving their record to 5-1.

In action against Beaver Lake, Kaycee Crossan and Whitney

Beyerlin led the defensive effort. Maggie Kujath was tough inside and

Rachel Travis was a force at both ends of the court. It was a combined team

effort on the offensive end as every player notched points on the scoreboard.

Travis led all scorers with 17, followed by Kujath’s eight,

Crossan’s seven and Beyerlin’s six as the Eagles roared to a 49-28 victory.

The Eagles next traveled down to Issaquah to visit the Panthers. After

a fairly close first half, the Eagles came out in the second half determined

to stop the Panther’s offense. Whitney Chelgren stepped up to the

challenge and led the tenacious defensive effort. With the help of Crossan, they

stifled the Panthers’ offense, allowing just 11 team points in the second half.

On the offensive end, with Beyerlin dishing out the assists

with pinpoint passing, Travis and Kujath were the beneficiaries, each scoring

in double figures. Kujath connected on the inside for 10 points. Travis

pulled up for threes and twos and led all scorers with 25. Beyerlin pumped in

seven and Kelsey Meyers contributed another four to round out the scoring

as the Eagles cruised to a 55-28 victory.

Eagles win two

The Snoqualmie Middle School seventh-grade girls’ basketball

team rebounded from a tough loss to Pine Lake by winning two games this

past week. The Maywood Chargers attacked the Eagle’s nest and ran

into the tenacious defense of Collette Hatch, Robyn Pearson and

Amy Whitney, who limited Maywood to 14 total points. SMS won the game

30-14.

Erin Caldwell and Sarah Travis, coming in off the bench, set the

Eagles on fire with a combined 10 points in the second quarter. SMS controlled

the backboards with 22 combined rebounds by Chelsey Potoshnik,

Lindsay Florence and Carmen Dunford.

With Jessica Marley getting injured, Alina Plavsky cooly sank

her free throw. Marley returned to score four fast-break points. The Eagles

finished off the Chargers with the impressive free-throw shooting form of

Kali Walker.

Then on Wednesday, the Eagles traveled to Beaver Lake where

they trounced the Bulldogs 28-6. The Eagles struggled to a 9-2

first-half lead, and then opened the floodgates in the third quarter by scoring 14

unanswered points.

Florence and Potoshnik combined for 10 of the Eagle’s 14

third-quarter points. Sarah Travis launched a 25-foot bomb for three points just as

the quarter ended.

The team held Beaver Lake in check with suffocating defense

and solid rebounding. The Eagles’ next home game will be Jan. 3 in a

rematch with the Bulldogs.
