‘Cats showcase good efforts

The Mount Si boys’ track-and-field team traveled to Federal Way to compete against 15 other teams in the Bill Harris Invitational recently.

Nick Verbon was the lone medalist for the ‘Cats in the 100-meter high hurdles. He also had a good long jump, placing second with a leap of 21 feet, 3 inches. Jacob Limestall scored in the pole vault, clearing a season’s best of 11 feet, 6 inches for second place.

Josh Flores threw the javelin 149 feet for fourth place, and Brian Lewis took third in the high jump, clearing 5 feet, 8 inches.

In the sprints, Jim Daughtrey ran the 100- and 200-meter in personal record times, placing sixth in the 100 and fifth in the 200. The 4×100 relay team of Barry Brady, Steven Johnson, Adam Rothgeb and Daughtrey ran a clean race for an eighth-place finish.


Golfers drop match to Newport

The Mount Si girls’ varsity golf team lost a close battle with Newport last week at Tall Chief Golf Course, with the final score coming in at 266-276.

Setting the pace for the ‘Cats again was co-medalist Jess Sanford, who shot a 50. Helping her in the effort were Stacy Shultz, Nicole Velotta, Kristina Whims, Rachel Keinath and Jessica Whims.


Girls’ track team has solid meet

Participating in the Bill Harris Invitational track meet last week, the Mount Si girls’ track team put together several exceptional efforts in various events.

Senior Ashley Van Oeveren won the discus with a toss of 110 feet, 1 inch and placed eighth in the shot. Piper Sherbon set a new school record of 34 feet, 101/2 inches in the triple jump to take first place, and also placed third in the high jump at 5 feet, 2 inches.

Carrie Frantz set a personal record in the pole vault at 8 feet to finish fourth, and Shannon Posey tossed the javelin 101 feet on her way to second place.

Whitney Chelgren finished seventh in the long jump with a distance of 14 feet, 2 inches, and Kelsey Lamon ran a season’s best time of 13.2 seconds to place fourth in the 100-meter race. Kristen Berndt placed third in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.3 seconds, and teammate Kelly Fletcher placed sixth in the 400 meters.

Jessica Hanna set a personal record in the 800-meter run, taking eighth with a time of 2 minutes, 35 seconds.


Tennis team defeats Totems

The Wildcat girls’ junior-varsity tennis team defeated Sammamish recently 7-6. Winning their singles matches were Tennyson Salopek, 8-5; Lindsay Loeffler, 8-1; and Amy Fenton, 8-3.

Doubles winners were the teams of Laurissa Everett and Marian Lloyd, 8-1; Cali Fredrichs and Cassy Gorton, 8-3; Nena Gonzales and Kailene Curnow, 8-4; and Karie Downing and Dulcinea McHugh, 8-5.


JV soccer team ties Wolverines

Mount Si’s Tyler Farrar scored the lone goal for the Wildcats last week as they tied the Bellevue Wolverines 1-1 in boys’ junior-varsity soccer.

Bellevue scored its goal at the 20-minute mark but the Wildcat defense dug in. Defenders Caleb McDaniels, Kyle Pillo, Jason Jenks and Blaine Sheldon, led by keeper John Nelson, did a solid job of denying Bellevue any more scoring.

Track girls set personal records

The Wildcat girls’ track team competed at the Easton Invitational last Saturday and turned in some season-best performances.

Piper Sherbon set a new record and placed fifth in the triple jump at 35 feet, 1 1/2 inches. She also placed third in the high jump at 5 feet, 2 inches.

Shannon Posey had a season-best throw of 110 feet, 10 inches to place sixth in the javelin. Whitney Chelgren set a personal record in the long jump at 15 feet, 2 inches and just missed the finals. Kristen Berndt’s mark of 102 feet, 8 inches in the javelin also just missed the finals.
