JV thumps Interlake

Mount Si’s junior-varsity softball team walked away with its first league win of the season, defeating Interlake 17-5.

Sam Baldwin was voted best defensive player and also went 2-for-2 offensively. Amy Brevick hit 3-for-4 and was voted best offensive player of the game. Keeva Kanuha and Racheal Godfrey both went 2-for-4, while Erica Evans, Leela Billow, Jennifer Gergasko and Elizabeth Short each had one hit. Rhea Robertson recorded the win as pitcher.


Red Wolves shut out Sammamish

Robert Carrasco scored the only goal of the night early in the second half to give the Cedarcrest boys’ varsity soccer team the upset and its first win of the season 1-0.

Chris Kracht posted the shutout for Cedarcrest (1-4). Sammamish, second in the 3A KingCo Valley Division, fell to 2-3.


Knights blast ‘Cats

Mike O’Hara picked up where he left off last week, scoring four goals and adding two assists as the Newport Knights defeated the Wildcats 7-1 in varsity soccer action.

O’Hara, who had six goals last week, scored twice in the first half. Pedro Batres also scored in the first half for Newport (4-0). Dan Barnes scored for Mount Si (1-3).


Islanders defeat Cedarcrest

With two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, Mercer Island scored its winning run to defeat Cedarcrest 6-5 in varsity baseball.

Steven Powell and Brian Stephenson both recorded doubles, and Sean McDonald added a home run. Powell went 2-for-4 and added an RBI. McDonald and Russell McGinnis also had RBIs.


Spartans drop Red Wolves

Bayley Lawrence went 2-for-3 with two RBIs to lead Skyline over Cedarcrest (2-3) 11-1 in varsity softball.

Sophomore catcher Liza Teichler was 2-for-3, including a triple. Jami Harrison drove in two runs for Skyline (3-2). Harrison struck out nine and won her second game of the year. Lyndsey Dooley had a double and Adreanne Lewis went 2-for-3.


Red Wolves blast Knights

Bri Medley led Cedarcrest to an impressive 234-262 victory over the Newport Knights golf team last week.

Medley, who took medalist honors, shot a 40. Other scores for Cedarcrest were: Michelle Whyman, 44; Katie Williams, 44; Destiny Schold, 52; and Lindsey Schold, 54.


JV girls lose to Bellevue

Despite a winning performance from Jessie Lentgis, who finished 9-8 in singles tennis play, the Mount Si Wildcats junior-varsity tennis team dropped its meet with Bellevue 6-3.

The doubles winners of Laurissa Everett and Cassy Gorton (8-6) and Neyssa Miller and Erin Hart (6-4) kept Mount Si in the hunt for the win.


JV soccer team beats Islanders

Despite a Mercer Island goal 19 minutes into the second half, the Mount Si Wildcats’ junior-varsity soccer team recorded an impressive win, 3-1.

Joe Gebhard picked up a pass from Kyle Doty and Tyler Austin to start the scoring for Mount Si. Ten minutes later, the ‘Cats were awarded a direct kick and Calaeb McDaniels put it in the net from 40 yards out. But that wasn’t the end, as Austin scored the final goal with an assist from Gebhard.


Cheerleaders take third

Several weeks ago, the four-person cheerleading stunt team of Gentry Fowler, Kristin Heath, Jill Marshall and Ralisha Zwick was notified that it had prequalified to compete in regional competition. In that competition, held at Pacific Lutheran University, the team won third place. An additional award went to Heath who, with her male stunt partner representing Galaxy Cheer, took a second-place finish.


Golfers defeat Sammamish

Notching its second win of the season, the Mount Si girls’ varsity golf team defeated Sammamish 274-291.

The team score was the best in three years for the ‘Cats. Leading Mount Si with medalist honors was Jess Sanford, who shot a personal best of 48. Assisting in the victory was Stacy Shultz, Nicole Velotta, Kristina Whims and Heidi Lee.


JV team loses to Knights

Despite goals by Oran Johnson and Tyler Austin, the Mount Si Wildcats boys’ junior-varsity soccer team lost to Newport 3-2.

Johnson scored on a break-away, and Austin was able to receive the ball from the midfield line for his score. The defense played tough but the Knights were able to find net one more time to give them the win.


‘C’ soccer pounds Interlake

The Mount Si boys’ “C” soccer team continued its undefeated ways last week against Interlake, recording a 1-1 tie.

Interlake scored first at the 21-minute mark off a deflection by a Mount Si defender.

The ‘Cats toughened up with strong midfield play, especially from Josh and Ryan Magnuson at the outside midfielder positions. Both of them played aggressively throughout the game.

The equalizing score came off a free kick by Evan Lloyd from the 40-yard line that was too strong for the Interlake keeper to stop. Jeff Lewis played a great game in the goal for the ‘Cats. Mount Si’s forwards kept strong pressure on Interlake’s defense throughout the game, creating many strong scoring opportunities, but the Saints were able to stave off several near goals.


Track team falls to Issaquah

The Mount Si girls’ track team was defeated by Issaquah last week 95-65. Despite the loss several individuals had outstanding performances in terrible weather conditions.

Kristen Berndt had a personal best of 105 feet, 3 inches in the javelin, and finished second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.4 seconds. Piper Sherbon had a jump of 34 feet, 3 inches in the triple jump for a first-place finish.

Kelly Fletcher had an impressive early season time of 1:03.9 in the 400 meters and placed second in the 200 meters. Cari Frantz won the pole vault at 7 feet, and Ashley Van Overen threw 103 feet, 5 inches to win the discus.

In the relays, the team of Kelsey Lamon, Merritt Kott, Berndt and Whitney Chelgren took second in the 4×400 meters. The team of Jessica Hanna, Kott, Fletcher and Chlegren also took second in the 4×200 meters with a time of 2:00.7.

Kelley Shannon took second in the 3,200 meters and Lillian Lazenby took third. Melissa Warren took second in the 800-meter run and sixth in the 1,600 meters. Amy Keogh took third in the high jump, right behind Sherbon who took second.


Islanders dump ‘Cats

Mount Si girls’ golf team faced some tough competiton last week as it lost a match to Mercer Island 293-260.

Leading the effort for the ‘Cats was Rachel Keinath shooting a 55. Other top finishers were Nicole Velotta, Stacey Shultz, Kristina Whims and Jessica Whims.


‘Cats tie Cedarcrest

The Mount Si boys’ junior-varsity soccer team played a tough battle against its Lower Valley rivals, the Cedarcrest Red Wolves, with the game ending in a 2-2 tie.

Skye Potter picked up an assist from Oran Johnson on an indirect kick for the first goal. Johnson provided one more assist, as Joe Gebhart scored goal No. 2 on a missed penalty kick. Cedarcrest then managed to gain control and added two goals of its own.


Lady Golfers fall to Skyline

The Mount Si girls’ golf team played Skyline in the pouring rain at Mount Si Golf Course last week, losing the match 278-258.

Leading the ‘Cats was Jess Sanford, who continued her improvement with a score of 46. Also improving and helping Sanford were Stacy Shultz, Rachel Keinath, Kristina Whims and Haley Macri.


Track team shows promise

Several key performances helped the Mount Si boys’ track effort, but they weren’t quite enough as the Wildcats lost to Issaquah 111-34.

Nick Verbon won the 110-meter high hurdles, the 300-meter hurdles and the long jump. His jump of 20 feet, 5 inches improved his all-time best by 4 1/2 inches.

Adam Rothgeb ran excellent hurdle races, placing third in both the 110 and 300 meters. Brian Lewis made the all-time, top-ten list in the high jump, clearing 6 feet, 1 inch. Josh Flores took second in the javelin with a throw of 144 feet, 9 inches, and Eric McCammon was third in the shot put with a throw of 36 feet 11 1/2 inches.
