Svarthumle slams way to Hitter of the Week honors

FOREST GROVE, ORE. – Pacific University baseball outfielder Aaron Svarthumle, a 2002 graduate of Mount Si High School, could not have been closer to perfect from the plate earlier this month, earning the first Northwest Conference Hitter of the Week honor of the season.

Svarthumle was honored for a week that saw the transfer from Southwestern Oregon Community College go 14-for-16 from the plate, making for a .875 batting average. The effort included seven runs scored, seven RBIs, four doubles, a home run and a stolen base.

“I know that it was one of the best weeks for a player hitting the ball that I have seen in over 20 years of coaching baseball,” said Pacific head coach Greg Bradley. “He not only hit for average, but hit the ball hard every time he was at the plate.”

Svarthumle was put out only once in the streak, on a fly ball in the first inning of their game against Lewis and Clark recently. He turned in a 10-for-11 effort in a three-game series over the weekend of March 6 and 7 at Menlo, which included a home run that traveled well over the park’s 426-foot center field fence. He was never put out by the Oaks, and was only denied a hit on a fielder’s choice ball in the ninth inning of Saturday’s second game.
