Mount Si controls game against Bellevue; improves record to 2-6

SNOQUALMIE – The Mount Si boys’ soccer team was all business last Tuesday night in its game against the last-place Bellevue Wolverines, winning 3-2 despite some rough play from the opposing club.

During the ninth minute of the game, a Bellevue player was warned for being too aggressive. After committing a hard foul, he received a yellow card and was temporarily suspended from the game.

As a result, Mount Si was allowed a penalty kick. The ball didn’t make it into the net, but seconds later, Pete Talevich passed it to Evan Lamon, who kicked the ball directly toward the keeper’s box. Bellevue’s goalie, Ed Evanson, slipped on the wet grass and the ball hit the net, giving the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.

The next goal for the Wildcats came in the 31st minute of the game when Lamon scored, and Talevich picked up another assist.

Both Jed McDaniels and Nick Martindale supplied non-stop defense throughout the game, making it difficult for the Wolverines to move the ball out of their half of the field. Bellevue’s goalkeeper, however, fared better. McDaniels and Martindale each took shots late in the first half that could have put Mount Si even further ahead, but Evanson intercepted anything that threatened his team’s goal box.

Talevich was allowed a direct free kick in the 46th minute of the game after being tripped by one of the Bellevue defenders. His shot was good for the ‘Cats’ third goal of the night.

Mount Si goalkeeper Brandon Meidinger was able to hold Bellevue from scoring until the 62-minute mark, when Tomyuki Miyagi scored on a penalty kick after being fouled by a Mount Si player.

With less than six minutes left in the game, the Wolverines brought in Manuel Barrientos to play goalie for Evanson, who provided an offensive spark for the Wolverines. Soon after the switch, he made it past the Mount Si defense and scored Bellevue’s second goal.

McDaniels and Talevich came back hard in the last few minutes with two more goal attempts, but their efforts were thwarted by Barrientos. Then a Bellevue player’s attempt to tie the game in the final 20 seconds was thwarted by Meidinger. Mount Si won the game 3-2, and improved their league record to 2-6.

“It was nice to get a win,” Talevich said. “We’ve improved a lot this year.”

Mount Si still has four games left to play, one of which is against Valley rival Cedarcrest on May 3.

“I think we have a good shot at beating Cedarcrest, we’re both pretty evenly matched,” Talevich said.

The team also faces Skyline and Interlake, two of the best teams in the KingCo League, on April 27 and May 1 respectively.

“Skyline will be tough. We just have to keep our confidence up and keep it close with a win or a tie,” Talevich said.

The top six teams in the KingCo League advance to the league playoffs to be held May 10 and 12.

Mount Si’s next game is at home against Liberty at 7:30 p.m. April 24.
