Hawks defeat Eagles in “Battle of the Birds”

The Chief Kanim Lady Hawks played a strong match against Snoqualmie Middle School, coming from behind to win two of the three games 25-22, 22-25 and 25-23. The wins gave the team a season record of 8-2.

In game one, Miranda Pratt had eight points, two kills and four digs, also playing strong at the net. Bethany Frieler, who has been out with a back injury, had six points and three kills.

In game two and three, Lauren Schelley and Tess Sollitto were the stars of the game with great plays and saves for the team to keep the Hawks in the match. Frieler and Schelley, who had nine points, had strong serves to help the Lady Hawks pull off a victory.

In the seventh-grade varsity game the Eagles came out on top but the Hawks were in it all the way. Devon Clemons, Adele Wolf and Alyssa McLauchin were the most consistent players with their serves and passes. The Hawks have progressed continuously during the season and their coaches are looking forward to next year.

In the seventh and eighth-grade JV games, both teams combined for a victory against the Eagles. In the deciding game, Alyvia Fernandez made the play of the season running out of bounds to make the save. The Hawks lost the first game but came back to win the next two. Outstanding plays came from Erin Anderson, Natalie Reynolds and Devin Harcus who combined for 24 points. Also scoring were Alyvia Fernandex, Caylene Castagno, Tylene Kenyon and Hannah Mortonson.

Hawks drop game to Tolt

Chief Kanim’s seventh-grade football team traveled to Tolt last week where they lost to the Thunderbirds 8-6. Tolt scored on a 10-yard counter early in the second quarter and kicked the two-point conversion to take an 8-0 lead into half-time. The Hawks came out ready to play in the second half as Tanner Riley connected with Evan Ellington on a 40-yard touchdown pass. The extra point was blocked, however, and the Hawks trailed 8-6. The Hawks had one final attempt to score with two minutes remaining in the game, but were stopped by a tough Tolt defense. The Hawks are now 4-1 and finish up this week against the Eagles.

Zupan had three catches for 50 yards and added seven tackles. Tyler Ostby had five receptions for 60 yards, and teammate Riley had 69 yards rushing and a 40-yard touchdown pass. Chris Hindmarch had one blocked punt and Rosco Castagno added an interception.

SMS rushes for two more wins

The Snoqualmie Middle School eighth-grade football team tacked two more wins onto its record. They defeated Buckley 42-0 and then defeated Tolt 28-6.

The Eagles put on an offensive display against Buckley in the first half. Tough blocking by Ben Olson, Tony Peterson and Tyler Roy provided holes for running backs Jason Alexander, Dane Smith, Sean Snead and Tyler Roy. Collectively, they rushed for more than 300 yards and four touchdowns. Smith added six more on a punt return for another Eagle touchdown, giving the Eagles a 20-0 half-time lead.

Snead returned the second half opening kickoff back for a touchdown but had it called back on a blocking penalty. The Eagle defense, led by strong end performances from Kyle Cantalini and Cody Graham, and excellent corner play from Brett Carr and Russell Boulanger, forced the Bulldogs to keep the ball between the tackles.

Against Tolt, the Snoqualmie varsity put out a “not welcome” sign as they used their offensive line to help put up 28 points on the scoreboard. Behind the line surge of Michael Davenport, Ben Olson and Ryan Ransavage, the Eagles opened gaping holes for Snead and Dane Smith, who both ran through and around defenders. Brandon Smith not only rushed for one score but also threw for another, connecting with Cantalini on a 30-yard touchdown pass. Jason Alexander used his speed on an end sweep for another 10-yard touchdown score. Tremendous hits on defense were applied by Boulanger, Tyler Roy, Cody Graham, with Ransavage and Davenport shutting down the inside, allowing only one score, as they improved their record to 4-0-1 with a 28-6 victory.

Hawks blast Glacier

The Chief Kanim Middle School varsity football team traveled to Glacier on Wednesday where they defeated the host team 23-12. The Hawks jumped on Glacier early as Joey Evans scored two touchdowns in the first quarter. Chief Kanim added a 27-yard field goal by Evans and the Hawks were rolling 17-0. On the next drive, Chad Billings scored a touchdown reception and Chief Kanim led 23-0.

Many players saw action in the game. Glacier mounted a comeback, although the game was never in doubt. Evans rushed for 212 yards on 12 carries. Billings and Alex Hiebert both had interceptions. Zach Brevik again led the Hawks with eight tackles. Chief Kanim is now 5-0 and is looking forward to the “Battle of the Birds” against Snoqualmie Middle School Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Chief Kanim.
