Wildcats Win District

The Mount Si Wildcats fastpitch softball team clinched a berth to the state 3A softball tournament in style last Friday, riding a strong all-around effort to a surprisingly easy 14-0 five-inning shellacking of the Holy Names Cougars of the Metro League at the Sea-King 3A District Tournament at Fort Dent Park in Tukwila. They then went on to defeat both Liberty and Issaquah for the Sea-King championship and the No. 1 seed for the state tournament

Against Holy Names sophomore Kayla Jayne smacked a three-run inside-the-park home run to key a huge six-run Wildcat outburst in the bottom of the third inning. Freshman pitcher Kandis Clesson struck out 12 Holy Names hitters, including four in the first inning — a feat made possible by a runner advancing to first base on a dropped third strike — to lead Mount Si to victory.

“You know I didn’t sleep a whole lot [Thursday] night,” said an excited Mount Si coach Larry White. “You never know what’s going to happen. We had four real good practices this week and after Skyline shut us out, I was really worried about Holy Names because I know our bats were going to come alive today.”

Jayne said preparedness was key.

“I didn’t think it was going to be that easy. I thought it was going to be a little bit closer but we were ready to play,” said Jayne.
