Richard “Dick” Daun Carmichael

November 25, 1936- Mar h 19, 2026

Richard “Dick” Daun Carmichael, a longtime resident of Snoqualmie and a familiar and trusted presence to generations of local residents, died on March 19, 2026, at age 89, following three weeks of hospice care at his eldest daughter’s home, surrounded by family.

Born on November 25, 1936, in Snoqualmie, Dick lived a life defined by hard work, kindness, and community spirit. He married Regina Watson in 1959, who died in January 1967. He married Elizabeth “Betty” Carmichael in November 1967. In 1973, he purchased the Coast to Coast Hardware store originally on Railroad Avenue (which later became True Value), and together they operated the store until retiring in 2002. Dick greeted customers by name, often stepping out from behind the counter to help them track down the right part or tool. He offered practical advice drawn from experience and took genuine interest in the projects people brought through the door. Over time, he became a fixture of Snoqualmie life, and his store a gathering place for neighbors and friends. In 1974, he was appointed to the Snoqualmie City Council to fill an unexpired term and was later elected to a four-year term in 1975 and again in 1979, reflecting his continued commitment to public service.

Outside the store, Dick enjoyed the outdoors, classic automobiles, travel, reading, poker nights with friends, and playing cribbage—games he approached with quiet competitiveness and good humor. He was known for his generous heart, steady sense of humor, and tireless willingness to lend a hand—whether fixing something that needed repair or simply showing up when someone needed help. Those who knew him best understood why he earned the nickname “The Lone Ranger.”

Dick is survived by his wife, Betty, who resides in memory care; his sisters, Janice Crouch, Pat Straley, and Vicki Zwiefelhofer; his children, Teri Young, Rich Carmichael, and Marian Hawley; his grandchildren, Kendra Vacca, Richard Carmichael, Raquel Carmichael, Chloe Spainhower, and Mo Spainhower; his great-grandson, Giovanni Vacca; and many extended family members and friends who will miss him deeply.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date, with details to be announced. In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to the Snoqualmie Valley Food Bank or the PBS Foundation, in honor of Dick’s lifelong commitment to his community and his love of learning.
