Letter: Embrace the PTA

Published 8:30 am Wednesday, August 31, 2016

Another school year adventure begins. Parents have overspent on backpacks, clothing, lunch boxes and other school supplies.

Every parent takes pride in seeing their daughter or son off to school, first day of their new grade. Parents and kids are filled with all sorts of emotions, excitement, and apprehension. They anxiously await the results of that first day then attempt to balance school work and after school activities. Back to school is a true adventure each year.

Luckily at every school in the Valley, the PTA is helping behind the scenes. People hear PTA and they hide. I was that way as a volunteer at Opstad, until about the 20th time a teacher mentioned the PTA had provided materials. I wondered, who were these ninjas behind the scenes? Simple answer: Parents with children in school.

Ask what the PTA does at your child’s school; you will get a list of about 100-plus activities. Parents are filling the gap left by state legislators, through their support of the PTA.

Therefore, “Embrace the PTA.” Introduce yourself. Donate early and often. PTA’s at each school need between $200-300 per child in donations throughout the school year. Teachers submit requests for materials and activities before school even begins and PTA boards review them for funding.

Money is not everything though, volunteering time at school and PTA events is incredibly important and impactful. Volunteer a few hours at events throughout the school year (Walk-a-thons, movie nights, ice cream socials) your kids will be glad you did. Begin saving box-tops now.

Parents and kids, have an excellent school year.
