Middle school students writing novels in one month, meet teen author

Published 4:16 pm Tuesday, November 1, 2011

Twenty-five Snoqualmie Middle School students are taking part in the National Novel Writing Month Young Writer’s Program.

On Tuesday, Nov. 1, they got the chance to meet Riley Carney—a successful teenage author of five fantasy novels.  She lives in Colorado, so the interview was conducted through Skype in teacher Rene Peterson’s room.

During National Novel Writing Month, the challenge is to complete an entire novel in just 30 days. Participants begin writing November 1 and must finish by midnight, November 30. The word-count goal for our adult program is 50,000 words, but the Young Writers Program (YWP) allows 17-and-under participants to set reasonable, yet challenging, individual word-count goals.

In 2010, 200,000 adults and 41,000 young writers participated.
