Volunteers bring off-leash dog park to Carnation

A volunteer effort is bringing an off-leash dog park to the city of Carnation.

Carnation City Council members in June approved the temporary use of a lot near the city’s wastewater treatment plant as a dog park, following several weeks of discussion with project proponent Ann Estrin-Wassink.

Estrin-Wassink originally proposed the use for the eight-acre site on Larson Avenue several months ago, and was excited that the council approved the use. “I can’t believe it went through!” she said.

She will work with City Manager Ken Carter to coordinate the installation of the fencing needed. The park will make use of some existing fence, and all new fencing will be donated and installed by volunteers, Estrin-Wassink said.

Before approving the use, the council had its insurance underwriter review and OK the project. Council also reviewed a strict set of rules to be posted at both entrances to the park. All dogs in the park must be licensed, vaccinated, and healthy, and cannot be left without supervision. Smoking, digging, pinch collars and puppies under 4 months old are not allowed.
