A poem for a Marine

Published 2:27 pm Tuesday, November 9, 2010

When I was just a young boy

Sometimes I’d sit alone

And dream about adventures

In places far from home

I’d be a tall, strong warrior

With others of my ilk

Fight for rights and freedoms

Of ladies dressed in silk

And also for their children

Who looked a lot like me

Sitting on big porches

Caught up in their dreams.

Semper Fi and God bless!

(This poem) explains why I (and probably a lot of other Leathernecks) joined the Marine Corps back in 1968, while the Vietnam War was still in full swing.

I submit it in memory of Marine LCpl. Eric Ward, who was also a Marine machine gunner, just like me.
