Is Spring on it’s way?
Published 1:43 am Friday, October 3, 2008
I think Spring may actually be making her way in our direction.
The days are a bit longer; it isn’t pitch dark at 5 pm anymore. I have little
green shoots coming up in my flowerbeds. The primroses are blooming and as
one woman told me, her winter pansies would be beautiful if the slugs
would stay out of them.
It is supposed to be a bad year for slugs, or a good one if you
are a slug. Apparently it hasn’t been cold
enough to kill off the eggs and we will be inundated by ravening hoards any
day now. I always figured slugs were just part of living in the Northwest. So
I salt them down and move on.

The Mountain Man and I walked to Meadowbrook the last sunny
day. We use the old railroad grade trail. It is about 3 miles I guess, but it is a
nice walk. Lots of scenery and wildlife. We have seen Blue Heron and ducks,
and, of course, geese. Also a deer or two. We hope that all the walkers and
trail users will join us in thanking Mt Si Golf Course for the nice fence
they are putting up along the piece of trail which goes through the course.
It will protect the walkers from hooks, slices, and just plain bad shots. I
imagine it will also make life easier for whoever has to collect the golf
balls from the driving range. There won’t be so many in the road.
I also hope that it will remain safe from vandalism. Some of the
bridges on the trail have been damaged. We saw the fire department putting out
a dumpster fire at Cascade Golf course the same day. People write on the
library building with great frequency. We have had the brass letters on
the library building taken, leaving some interesting words behind.
I guess I just don’t understand the thrill of destroying something.
People always blame it on teenagers, but it is done by people of all ages. I don’t
see why they can’t realize that the cost of repair is passed onto family
and friends in higher taxes, higher fees for things and is a general waste of money.
If you feel it is necessary to prove you were here, do something good
instead of writing your name on the walls.

More Silly Signs. This one is historical. On the reader board
at ShopRite (now QFC), many moons ago, they were offering a Lame
Leg Roast. (Lamb) One local lady was heard to remark that she was so
glad they didn’t use his good leg! Names will be supplied on request.
The second one is another from the South. There is a place in
Naselle called the Naselle Youth Camp. On all the signs, it also says DO NOT
PICK UP HITCHIKERS!
I didn’t understand this until someone pointed out that this was
Pacific County’s version of Echo Glen. So I guess we won’t pick up any
hitchhikers.

Did you know that those new cloths being sold that pick up all
the dirt are good for dusting computer and electronic stuff? Brand names
are Swiffer, and Pickups, and I think there are a couple of others. They
work great on computer screen and keyboards, and on the black plastic
covers of things like stereo equipment. They don’t have any oil or lotions
in them, so they don’t leave any residue behind. They are
especially good for cat hair. Too bad they don’t work
on the cat!

Thought for the Week: When the hounds of spring are on
winter’s traces, the mother of months in meadow or plain Fills the shadows
and windy places With lisp of leaves and ripple of rain. – Swinburne
