SNOQUALMIE – Maggie MacCool scored the game-winning goal late in the second half to give the Skyline Spartans a come-from-behind 3-2 victory in girls’ soccer action last Tuesday in chilly, wet weather at Mount Si High School.
The goal capped off a three-goal, second-half outburst for Skyline, who had trailed Mount Si well into the second half.
Kristen Berndt scored the two Wildcat goals. Her first came in the 27th minute of the first half; the second came in the 11th minute of the second half.
On this goal, Berndt got past several Skyline defenders, broke away down the left side of the field and kicked the ball past Skyline goalkeeper Hannah Taylor to put Mount Si up 2-0 against the leaders in the KingCo Conference Sky Division. It looked as if Mount Si might pull off a huge upset.
The Spartans, though, responded to the challenge, and started to play better late in the first half. They put the pressure on the Wildcats, forcing Mount Si’s defense and goalkeeper Kristen Travis to make great plays, which they did.
Skyline missed on several chances late in the first half. The pressure continued in the second half, and Skyline came close several more times – missing twice off the goalposts – until the Spartans scored two quick goals midway through the half.
Skyline kept the pressure on, and MacCool scored the game winner in the 34th minute off a feed from Aimee Wilson. MacCool and Wilson also connected on the tying goal for the Spartans, however, the roles were reversed, with Wilson scoring on an assist from MacCool.
Mount Si midfielder Kelsie Owen went down with what appeared to be an ankle injury with about 10 minutes left in the game. She went off under her own power after being attended to and looked to be all right.
Coach Bruce Caldwell told the Valley Record that Skyline proved to be a very good team, and that they were very intense. He said that Skyline had outshot the Wildcats, and that the pressure from the Spartans was what made the difference in the game.
