Wildcats sending six to state

Six Mount Si High School track athletes went to the Sea-King tournament in West Seattle last week and all six will continue on to the state meet in Pasco this weekend.

The girls’ team has four advancing to the state meet, including Kristin Berndt in the 100-meter hurdles and javelin, Piper Sherbon in the triple jump and long jump, Shannon Posey in the javelin and Caitlin Braun in the discus. For the men, Tyler Austin advances in the 200 and Brian Lewis in the high jump.

Berndt ran a 16.18 in the 100-meter hurdles in the finals to take fourth place. In the preliminaries she placed fifth with a time of 16.60 seconds. She also placed second in the javelin with a throw of 123 feet, 4 inches to advance in that event. Teammate Shannon Posey took fourth in the javelin with a throw of 115 feet, 9 inches to advance to state.

Piper Sherbon did not qualify for state in the discus but did show her stuff in the triple jump, taking third with a distance of 36 feet, 1 1/2 inches. She also made the cut in the long jump with a distance of 16 feet, 6 inches, good enough for fourth place.

In the discus Caitlin Braun put in a valiant effort to take fourth with a distance of 112 feet, 9 inches, allowing her to advance to the state competition.

For the men’s team Tyler Austin stepped it up a notch in the finals in the 200, recording a time of 22.71 seconds, good enough for fourth place. In the prelims he had ran a 23.06, putting him in eighth place, barely making the field for the finals.

Brian Lewis placed fifth in the high jump with a height of 6 feet, 1 inch.

The state track meet will be held this week in Pasco beginning May 28.
