Week in sports

`Cats pull out win in Yelm tournament

Mount Si wrestlers traveled to the Yelm Dual-meet Bracket

Tournament over the holiday break and came away with a close

36-24 win over Yelm in the finals to take the championship.

In the first round, the team took on Camas and won by a

score of 41-22. Kyle Cunningham, Chad Mills, Brad Davis and

Brad Conner all recorded pins. Jeff Stone won by a major

decision, as did Dylan Seubert. David Crotts also won by decision.

The win moved the `Cats into the second round against

Selah. Mount Si took the win 46-20 to move into the finals against Yelm.

Stone, Mills, Crotts, Brad Davis and Seubert all had

pins against their Selah opponents. Kyle Jacobsen and Conner

won by major decision while teammates Bobby Taylor and

Jed McDaniels followed with decisions.

Yelm is always a strong team and it wasn’t until after the

final matches that the true winner was known. Jason Rothgeb started

the action with a 5:55 pin of Louie Gillespie in an exhibition

match in the 103-pound class. Teammate Jordan Prior had a

tough match against Yelm’s Kyle Fisher in the 112-pound class, losing

18-3. Cunningham also lost by decision 5-0 against state placer

Matt Smith. Cunningham’s ability to stave off the pin kept the

team scores close.

Nick Martindale had a similar experience with his

second-in-state opponent, Justin Cruz, losing by decision 9-3. Jon

Emerson was pinned in the 130-pound class by Yelm’s Scott Nater, but

Jeff Stone followed up with an 8-6 decision over Eddie Ellis in

the 135-pound class. Veteran Hiram Tame had a tough match to

Matt Linger losing 9-1 in the 145-pound class, but Crotts

evened things up with a 9-6 decision over Yelm’s Justin Seymour.

Bobby Taylor lost by a 10-4 decision against Adam Zahm

in the 160-pound class. Jed McDaniels came back from

behind to win his match 6-4 over Yelm’s Adam Stone. The

Wildcats followed with three pins from Brad Davis, Seubert and

Connor to clinch the match and take the trophy.

JV crushes Interlake

The Mount Si junior-varsity girls’ basketball team notched

its 10th win of the season last week by defeating Interlake 64-16.

The Lady `Cats jumped out to a 13-2 first-quarter lead and

never looked back. Playing without one starter and having two others

play with what can only be described as horrendous coughs, the rest

of the ladies picked up the slack to ensure the convincing win.

Rachel Davis led all scorers with 20 points, and Karin

Brevick chipped in 14.

Varsity girls continue winning ways

Nicci Landdeck led the Mount Si girls’ varsity

basketball team to another win, scoring 16 points in the 58-37 pounding

of the Interlake Saints. With the win, the team’s record improved to

9-2 overall, giving them sole possession of first place in the

Valley League conference.

Kristen Travis also helped in the effort by scoring 13

points, followed by Angela Jones with eight. Moriah Hover was

tough underneath, grabbing 11 boards and scoring 11 points. Also

scoring for the `Cats was Lizzie Finnegan with six.

Cedarcrest drops game to Liberty

The Cedarcrest girls’ basketball team dropped its first

league game of the New Year to the Liberty Patriots 50-37. The loss

put them at a 9-2 overall record, tied with Mount Si but with one

less league win.

Scoring for the Red Wolves were Angeuli Brady with 10,

Lindsay Peterson with seven, Sarah Gustat with six, Nikki

Nelson with five, Libbye Haddon with four, Amber Sutter with three

and Rachel Salz with two.

Red Wolves win third straight

The Cedarcrest Red Wolves’ wrestling team recorded its

third team win by defeating the Sammamish Totems last week

57-17.

Leading it off was Aaron Pedeferri in the 112-pound

class who pinned the Totems’ Bobby Price at the 1:12 mark of the

first round. In the 119-pound class, teammate Darren DeBoer

followed suit, pinning Jacob Kaplan at 1:34 in the first round.

In the 125-pound class, the Red Wolves’ Kurtis Lott won

by a 19-10 major decision over the Totems’ James Musco. The

Totems’ Brett Gardner pinned Tate Brammer in the 130-pound class,

but Alan Schults came right back and pinned the Totems’

John Nordeck in the 135-pound class at 1:39 in the first round.

Andrew Claussen won by forfeit in the 140-pound class,

and neither team fielded a wrestler in the 145-pound class. The

Red Wolves’ Tony Stedman lost by technical fall to the Totems’

Alan Itkin in the 152-pound class. In the 160-pound class, Dan

Amador recorded a forfeit against the Totems, while teammate

Robby Westerman pinned Mike D’Angelo 33 seconds into

the match.

In the 189-pound class, Chris Ansell pinned the Totems’

Mike Guntel 52 seconds into the match, and both Cole Birk and

Ben Schelty won by forfeit.

Liberty downs Cedarcrest

The Cedarcrest Red Wolves boys’ basketball team lost to

Liberty last week 67-53.

Scoring for the Red Wolves was Kyle Eldride with nine,

Brett deVries with eight, Chris Kracht with 20, Nick Blanchard

with five, James Conrick with five, Nick Rich with five and

Brian Stevenson with two.

Wildcats drop first league game

Mount Si boys’ basketball team faced a determined

Interlake team last week and came out on the losing end 66-58. The

loss gave the Wildcats a 9-2 overall record for the season and a

3-1 league record, behind Interlake.

Scoring for the `Cats was Isaiah Cormier with 20 and

Sean Fallows with 13. Logan Ratcliffe had six, Vince Longbucco

five, Mike Dahm four, Mike Dollinter three and Brett Bergstrom two.

Cedarcrest records fourth team win

The Cedarcrest Red Wolves’ wrestling team blasted

Interlake last week 66-6. Starting it off for the Red Wolves was

Michell Weimann who won by forfeit. Aaron Pedeferri followed with

a first-round pin of his opponent in the 112-pound class.

Teammate Darren DeBoer did the same, pinning his

opponent at the 3:06 mark of the second round. Kurtis Lett also

followed the trend and pinned his Interlake opponent 25 seconds into

the match. Tate Brammer pinned his opponent at 3:39 in the

second round in the 130-pound class.

In the 135-pound class, Interlake had one of its two

wins, as the Red Wolves’ Schults was defeated 10-5. But

Andrew Claussen and Tony Stedman came back to pin their opponents in

the 140- and 145-pound classes for the Red Wolves. Dan Amador

won by decision 10-9 in the 160-pound class and

Robby Westerman followed suit with a 9-3 decision. Cole Birk and

Ben Schelty rounded out the scoring with a win by forfeit in the

215- and 275-pound classes. The win puts Cedarcrest on top

with Mount Si.

`Cats continue dominance

With the Wildcat coaches sporting a bleached blonde

look on the edge of the mat, the Mount Si wrestling team dismantled

Skyline 67-10 in wrestling last week. The bleach jobs were the result

of the coaches’ promise to do so if the `Cats could defeat

Liberty, which they handily did in the first league meet of the season.

The Wildcats recorded five pins against Skyline, which

only fielded wrestlers in nine out of 14 weight classes. Recording

pins were Jordan Prior at 112-pounds, Jeff Stone at 135, Chad Mills

at 140, Hiram Tame at 145 and Brad Connor at 275. Kyle

Cunning-ham won a 9-7 overtime decision against his opponent, and

Nick Martindale won by major decision in the 125-pound class.

Skyline recorded forfeits at 152, 160, 171, 189 and 215 pounds.
