MSHS golfers shine at league


Four Mount Si golfers competed in the KingCo 3A League golf tournament held at Taylor Creek Golf Course last Tuesday. Freshman Jess Sanford scored a 106 and will advance to the district tournament this week at the Snohomish Golf Course.

Also playing in the league meet for the Wildcats was Stacy Shultz and Erica Jepson, who each shot 114, and Rachel Keinath, who scored a 131. Shultz, Jepson and Keinath do not advance to the district match.

Doubles team goes to district


The Mount Si doubles team of Jaclyn and Cristina Boals advanced to the Sea-King District tennis tournament that was held at Lower Woodland Park on Tuesday because of their top six placing at the 3A KingCo League meet last week.

At the league meet, they beat Laura Pepka and Natalie Brande from Liberty in two sets, 6-0 and 6-3. They won one set and lost two in the quarterfinals (6-3, 4-6, 7-5) to Interlake’s Elan Holmberg and Dana Mills, but still placed high enough to qualify for the district tournament.

If they place among the top six doubles teams at district, they will move on to compete in the state meet on May 25 and 26 at the Nordstrom Courts at the University of Washington. Results from Tuesday’s meet were not available before the Valley Record went to press.

In singles matches at league, Emily Pizzuto defeated Yao Chen of Interlake in both sets, 6-4 and 6-3, but lost in the quarterfinals to Issaquah’s K.D. Babitsky, 6-1 and 6-0. Lauren Berndt lost her match to Aya Izuta of Newport, 6-3 and 6-2.

In other doubles matches, Lauren Stevenson and Erin Vasser lost their match to Stephanie Hammond and Lilli Sandler of Mercer Island by a score of 6-1 in both sets.

Golfers qualify for district


Cedarcrest golfers Michelle Whyman, Katie Williams and Shawn Gorden qualified for the 3A Sea-King District golf tournament by scoring in the top 27 spots at the 3A KingCo league Mmeet at Taylor Creek Golf Course last Tuesday.

Whyman scored a 95 and took 10th place, Williams finished in 24th place with a round of 105, and Gorden shot 106, good enough for 25th place.

The district golf tournament was held at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday at Snohomish Golf Course. Results were not available before the newspaper went to press.

The golfers helped lead their team to a 5-4 record in league. The team also placed third in their league behind Mercer Island (6-3) and Skyline, Interlake and Bellevue, who all tied for first place with records of 8-1.

‘Cats lose to Islanders


The Mount Si Wildcat varsity soccer team lost 7-0 to Mercer Island last Tuesday during the first-round league playoff game. The Islanders scored two goals in the first half and five in the second to shut down the Wildcats and put an end to their season.

The ‘Cats finish their 3A KingCo league season with a 4-9 record, good for sixth place out of 10 teams.

This is the second time this season the Islanders have won a shut-out game over the Wildcats.

On April 3, they won by a score of 6-0.

CHS loses in playoffs


The Cedarcrest softball team made history by making it to the first round of the playoffs, but lost 3-2 to Mercer Island. The win for the Islanders can be credited to Jacque DiJulio, who made it to first base in the first inning after being hit by the pitch and eventually stole home off a wild pitch.

DiJulio hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning that brought in the Islanders’ second and third runs.

Danielle Brittain pitched for the Red Wolves and was able to hold Mercer Island from scoring for three innings before giving up the home run. Cedarcrest ended its season with a 9-11 record. Sunny Beaman had an RBI.

Wildcats lose in first round


The Mount Si softball team lost to Newport in the first round of the league playoffs last Thursday by a score of 9-3.

The two teams were tied up at 1-1 in the first inning. But in the second, the Knights came back with eight runs. The Wildcats added two runs in the sixth inning, but were unable to catch up to the relentless Knights. Mount Si ends its season with a 6-13 record, while Newport finishes with a 9-10 league record and moved on to the district tournament.

JV strikes out Interlake


Mount Si beat Interlake in junior-varsity baseball April 27 by a score of 4-2. Nick Kirschner pitched six innings and gave up three hits and two runs, while striking out seven. It was his fourth win of the season. He was also 2-for-2 at the plate.

Pitcher Alex Smart earned the save by sitting the Saints down 1-2-3 in the seventh inning. Though Mount Si’s offense was only able to string together five hits, it was enough to keep Interlake off balance.

‘Cats give up 10-run rally


Mount Si clung to a 2-1 lead before Issaquah pounded out five hits and scored 10 runs in the seventh inning to defeat the Wildcats 11-5 in an April 30 junior-varsity baseball game.

Alex Smart had seven strikeouts and gave up only two hits in six innings. Mount Si battled back with three hits and three runs in the seventh, but it was not enough.

‘Cats’ offense prevails


Mount Si was able to hold off Skyline May 2 in junior-varsity baseball and earn an 11-9 win. Tyler Roy pitched six solid innings, had six strikeouts and only gave up five hits.

Alex Smart came on in the seventh and earned his second save. Earlier in the game, he hit a two-out, two-run home run in the first inning. It was his third of the season.

Brandon Bumpus was 4-for-4 at the plate and had four RBIs. Danny Baldwin was 3-for-4 with three RBIs, and Jordan Latteau and Smart had two hits each.
