‘Cats pound Franklin Pierce
The Mount Si Wildcats junior-varsity baseball team trounced on the Franklin Pierce Cardinals March 14th with a score of 17-7.
Nick Kirschner started off pitching for the Cats’ and sparkled in his first appearance at the pitcher’s mound for the year. Of the two innings Kirschner played, he allowed no hits, no walks, and struck out three people. Eann Opsal came on in relief for the Cats’ in the third inning and only gave up two runs in four innings and struck out five people.
Taylor McLellen then came in to shut the door on the Cards’ in the seventh inning. G.C. Hillburn went three for five with two walks and four RBIs to help the Wildcats with the win.
Sammamish left in the dust
The Mount Si girls’ track team defeated Sammamish yesterday 75-70.
Tanya Smart won the discus with an outstanding throw of 118 feet, 5 1/2 inches, and placed first in the shot put with a throw of 30 feet, 5 1/2 inches and first in the javelin with a throw of 101 feet, 6 inches.
This was senior Jessica Scalzo’s first track meet. She won both the 1,600-meter race in 5 minutes, 36 seconds, and the 3,200-meter in 11:54, just 12 seconds shy of the school record. Sheena Kern placed second in the mile and two mile. Freshman Kristen Behrndt won the 100-meter high hurdles in a time of 17.7 seconds, and also captured the 300-meter high hurdles in 54.2. Nikki Belt jumped 8 feet in the pole vault and took first place, and Ashley Wiegardt placed second in the long jump, triple jump and 200-meter race. Smart, Catlin Braun and Amber Smith swept the javelin event and helped lead the Cats’ toward their first season victory.
Boys’ track team gets win
The Mount Si boys’ track team left the Sammamish track team trailing in their dust Saturday when they defeated them 80-65.
Senior Eddie Horstman dominated the sprinting events winning both the 100-meter and 200-meter dash. Horstman’s time in the 100 was 11.3 seconds, and he ran 23.8 seconds in the 200. Horstman also anchored the first place, 4×100-meter relay team that included Dan Barry, Nils Bubeck and Kai Miyamoto. Their time was 45.9 seconds.
Freshman Michael Keller stepped up to the challenge of the 110-meter high hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles and took second place. Mount Si swept the 400-meters with the help of Barry’s first place time of 54.2, followed by teammates Craig Fanger and Bobby Taylor’s second and third place victories. Payton Thompson picked up two first place finishes in the mile with a time of 4:55.6 and the two-mile in which he ran 10:44.8.
Jacob Limestall won the pole vault, clearing 10 feet, 6 inches, and John-Paul Likes was second in the long jump while Brandon Tam was second in the triple jump.
Dan Haakenson conquered the shot put, discus, and javelin placing first in each. Haakenson threw the shot put 41 feet, 4 inches, the discus 151 feet, 10.5 inches, and the javelin 147 feet.
Cedarcrest girls triumph
The Cedarcrest girls’ track team took home a landslide win Thursday against Interlake High School. The girls placed first in every event racking up 122 of the points. Interlake only scored 27 points.
Abby Kwiat won the 100-meter high hurdles with a time of 17.3 seconds. Morgan Jackson placed second. Jamie Brooks won the 100-meter race in a time of 13.2. Chloe Christman and Kylie Fassler placed second and third. Distance runner Kelly Ramirez won the 800-meter in 2:34.6 and the mile in 5:50. Ashley Grant took second place in the 800-meter and 1600-meter races.
The 4×100-meter relay team which included Christman, Fassler, Jackson and Maurer finished in 56.5 seconds. Erin Kendig’s 400-meter time was 1:02.5. Candice Shephard won the 300-meter high hurdles in a time of 54.6, and Erin Kendig took first place in the 200-meter run. Ying Law won the two mile in 13:18. Maile Marshall jumped 4 feet, 10 inches to win the high jump, and later 14 feet, 8 3/4 inches to win the long jump. Reza Roth was second in the high jump, and Brooks placed second in the long jump. Pole-vaulter Katie Maurer soared 9 feet.
The shot put was won by Lauren Trocano with a throw of 30 feet, 5 1/2 inches. Lindsay Peterson threw the discus 105 feet, 1 inch for the win and javelin-thrower Erica Burch won with a throw of 92 feet, 1 inch. Lauren Trocano placed second and Marcie McCoy was fifth in the javelin.
Boys’ lose to Interlake
The Cedarcrest boys’ track team took second place against Interlake last Thursday winning only five of the 17 events.
Nick McBride won the 110-meter high hurdles in a time of 17.7 seconds. James Conrick’s 4:36 mile garnered him a first place victory. Chris Martin finished the 400-meter in first place with a time of 57.3 seconds. Colin McDonnell took third place. The Cedarcrest 4×400-meter relay team was the only one to compete, and they ran 3:57.9.
Mike Allen jumped 5 feet, 10 inches in the high jump, placing first. And Conrick won his second event, the discus, with a throw of 113 feet, 1 inch. Aaron O’Neal took first in the javelin and threw it 161 feet, and also took third place in the triple jump. Brian Hunter placed third in the javelin.
MSHS soccer ties Garfield
The Mount Si soccer C team played an exciting game against Garfield High School March 19.
The ‘Cats dominated the game as they demonstrated great team effort in ball control both offensively and defensively. The only Mount Si goal was scored when Nick McCarty chipped the ball to Tyler Austin. Austin then passed the ball to the post to Jarrod Wiegardt, who put it into the net.
Mount Si held Garfield scoreless until the end of the first half when they squeaked through the Mount Si defensive line with a goal that tied the game. The final score was 1-1.
Cedarcrest tops Mount Si
The Cedarcrest varsity soccer team played a hard-fought game against Mount Si last Tuesday.
Both teams had ample opportunities to score but remained scoreless until the 74th minute of the game when an assist by Matt Mundy allowed Tommy Felts the first and only goal. Goalies were Chris Kracht for Cedarcrest and Evan Becker for Mount Si. Final score was 1-0.
Mount Si C team wins
Mount Si’s C team soccer players posted another win last Wednesday night. They played host to the Skyline Spartans while displaying great soccer skills in offense and defense.
Nick McCarty, assisted by Leo Bachand, began the scoring for the Wildcats with the first goal. The second goal was shot in by Jarrod Wiegardt with the help of an assist by McCarty. Brett Fallows and Andy Lund teamed up for the final goal for the Cats as Fallows passed the ball to Lund who made a cross into the corner of the net.
The Spartans were able to slip one goal by the Cats’ defensive line, but were unable to pull ahead with any more points to win. The Wildcats went home with a 3-1 victory over the Spartans.
Cat’s lose to Wolves
In C-team-baseball, Mount Si lost a close one 3-2 last Wednesday to the Cedarcrest Red Wolves.
While down 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth, the Wildcats made a comeback when Jason Smith hit a line-drive-single and two Wildcats scored. Cedarcrest held them at two points though, and no more runs were scored.
Mount Si had two great pitching performances by Luke Landdeck and Jason Smith.
Wildcats mash Sammamish
The varsity baseball team squashed Sammamish on March 20 5-2, and brought their KingCo record to 1-0.
Senior Marc Dahm had three hits and scored one run, while brother Mike Dahm had two hits and an RBI. Josh Serrick recorded one hit and an RBI and Tyler Osborn scored two runs.
Bryce Kaestner pitched the entire game only allowing one walk and notching 10 strikeouts. Mount Si was down two runs in the fourth inning. With runners at second and third and two outs, the Sammamish hitter singled and drove in both runners. Kaestner struck out the next batter for the third out. He then struck out five of the next nine hitters.
