‘Cats beat Islanders


The Mount Si boys’ baseball team beat Mercer Island on March 29 by a score of 3-1, improving its league record to 2-2. Nick Harpel pitched seven innings and only gave up one run on three hits and recording seven strikeouts.

There was a lot of action in the fifth inning as Tyler Osborn had a lead-off single and Marc Dahm followed with a single to center field. Then Osborn went to third and Dahm to second base on a double steal.

With the bases loaded, David LaBelle was hit by a pitch and Osborn scored. Aaron Svarthumle had a two-out, bases-loaded single that brought in Mike and Marc Dahm for the tying and go-ahead runs. Josh Serrick and Jeremy Bess also each had a hit.

Cedarcrest team does well

The Cedarcrest boys’ and girls’ track-and-field team traveled to Spokane for the Holder Relays March 31 and took sixth and eighth place, respectively, out of 20 teams.

In the boys’ competition, James Conrick placed first in the steeple chase with a time of 6:47. Danny Abell was third with a time of 6:55, and Chris Lee finished in 7:08, good for fifth place. Conrick placed third in the mile with a time of 4:29. Aaron O’Neal placed first in the javelin with a throw of 178 feet, 3 inches.

For the girls’ team, Kelly Ramirez placed first in the steeple chase, finishing in 8:37. The shot-put and discus relay teams placed third. Lindsay Peterson, Lauren Trocano and Sara Sage threw for a combined 84 feet, 11 1/2 inches, and the discus team, which consisted of Peterson, Sage Trocano and Rachel Salz, threw for a combined 237 feet, 8 inches. Peterson had the longest throw of 107 feet, 2 inches.

Anjuli Brady jumped 14 feet in the long jump and placed fifth, and Katie Maurer was fifth in the pole vault with a 9-foot effort.

Golf team wins again

The Mount Si golf team came away with its second victory of the season last Monday, beating Sammamish 300 to 310.

Stephanie Tolan of Sammamish won the match with a 48, but the next five places went to the Mount Si team to clinch the win.

Stacy Shultz shot a 54, Nicole Velotta shot 60, Jess Sanford scored a 61, and Jessie Potter and Jessica Avery shot 61 and 62, respectively.

Baseball team beats Bellevue

Mount Si’s baseball team improved its league record April 4 to 3-2 with a 5-1 win over Bellevue.

With the bases loaded in the fourth inning, Marc Dahm hit a fly ball to left-center field, which brought in Sean Sattler, who was on third. In the fifth inning, Mike Dahm had a lead-off single to center. Matt Poth also singled to center and Aaron Svarthumle hit a line-drive single down the left-field line to bring in Dahm. The seventh inning brought in the last two runs. Mike Dahm singled, and then David LaBelle was hit by a pitch. Scott Johnson came in as a pinch runner.

Dahm and Johnson advanced on a passed ball by the catcher, and then Dahm scored and Johnson went to third on a balk by the pitcher. Poth then singled, scoring Johnson.

Softball team takes a beating


The Mount Si varsity softball team lost 10-0 last Tuesday to the Liberty Patriots. Mount Si was down by three runs in the second inning and fell further behind when three more were scored in the fourth. The rainy game ended after one more run was scored by Liberty in the bottom of the fifth. Megan Alexander and Heather Lewis pitched.

Wildcats lose tennis match

The Mount Si junior-varsity girls’ tennis team lost to Newport March 30 9-7. Winning points for the team were doubles players Jessie Lentgis and Erin Hart, who won their match 8-6, Cassy Gorton and Audrey Christensen winning 6-3, and Katie Bankson and Neyssa Miller who won 7-6. Bankson also won her singles match 9-7.

JV ‘Cats pounce


The Mount Si junior-varsity softball team defeated Bellevue 10-0 last Wednesday. Annika Safstrom threw eight strikeouts, Ashley Beck hit a double and Chandra Rapin went 2-for-3.

C-team earns win

Mount Si’s C-team soccer players netted another win last Wednesday, beating the Redmond Mustangs 2-1.

Tyler Austin challenged a Mustang defender for the net and brought in the first score of the night. Nick McCarty picked up the ball from midfield on a breakaway and scored the second goal for the ‘Cats.

Tennis team sinks Saints


The Mount Si junior-varsity girls’ tennis team beat Interlake last Wednesday, winning all its matches and beating the Saints by a score of 12-0.

The singles winners were Julia Walker, Katie Bankson and Lindsay Loeffler, who won each of their matches 8-6. Jenae Stauch and Katelyn Munson won each of their singles matches 8-2, and Lizzie Finnegan won 8-1.

Doubles players Jessie Lentgis and Cara Hanson won their match 8-1; Neyssa Miller and Amy Fenton won 8-2; Erin Hart and Lauren Dunford won 8-6; Martina Lynch and Laurissa Everett won 8-0; Marian Lloyd and Cassy Gorton won 8-2; and Krista Fink and Audrey Christensen won 8-0.

Track team wins by a point

The Mount Si women’s track team scored one point more than Bellevue last Thursday, winning 71-70.

Senior Jessica Scalzo won the two-mile race in 11 minutes, 29.6 seconds and now holds the school record. Ashley Wiegardt won the 200-meters in 28.43 seconds and the triple jump with a leap of 31 feet, 11 inches. Wiegardt also placed second in the long jump with an effort of 15 feet, 6 inches, and ran the 400-meter race in 1:04.77 seconds, which also garnered second place.

Sophomore Tonya Smart won all three throwing events, including the discus with a toss of 104 feet, 6 inches, the shot put with a throw of 29 feet, 3 inches, and the javelin, with a throw of 83 feet, 5 inches.

Nikki Belt won the pole vault with a jump of 7 feet, and freshmen Kristen Behrndt won the 100-meter high hurdles in a season-best time of 17.33 seconds. Behrndt also placed second in the 300-meter high hurdles with a time of 52.55 seconds. Freshman Kelly Fletcher was second in the 200-meter race with a time of 29.45 seconds.

Boys lose to Bellevue

The Mount Si boys’ track team lost 79-68 against Bellevue last Thursday despite some strong performances.

Dan Haakenson won the shot put, discus and javelin throws. He set a personal record in the discus with a throw of 154 feet, 4 inches, and threw 43 feet in the shot put. He threw the javelin 137 feet, 1 inch.

Todd Barry placed second in the shot put with a throw of 41 feet, 9.5 inches. Nils Bubeck dominated the long and triple jumps, jumping 19 feet, 6 1/2 inches and 38 feet, 3 3/4 inches, respectively. Nick Verbon set a new school record in the 110-meter high hurdles, finishing in 15.10 seconds. Phillip Mangano placed first in the pole vault with a jump of 10 feet.

Dan Barry and Bobby Taylor placed first and second in the 400-meter dash, winning in 54.94 seconds and 58.16 seconds, respectively, and Jacob Wagonner and Payton Thompson placed second and third in the mile with times of 4:53 and 4:54.

Thompson also took second place in the two-mile with a time of 10:34, only 10 seconds slower than the winner, Richard Franck of Bellevue. Eddie Horstman placed third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.60 seconds, and was fifth in the 100-meter race with a time of 12.02.

Golfers at top of their game

The Cedarcrest girls’ golf team notched another win last Wednesday against Newport, beating the Knights 267 to 280. Cedarcrest’s Katie Williams won with a score of 49. Teammate Michelle Whyman followed with a 52, and Bri Medley and Destiny Schold each scored 55. Lindsey Schold shot a 56. The team is now 4-0 and is in first place in the KingCo League.
