The week in sports

Soccer team drops two

The Mount Si women’s varsity soccer team’s struggles to find

the back of the net continued last week, dropping games to Sammamish

and Liberty.

Against Sammamish, the `Cats lost 3-0 last Tuesday. The

Totems’ Katie Miyake scored first 15 minutes into the game, assisted by

Mariye Wick.

The duo combined again in the second half, with Miyake knocking

it past goalkeeper Kristen Travis at the 46-minute mark. Eighteen

minutes later, Michelle Fretwell notched the final goal, with an assist from

Ashley Minnie.

Playing against Liberty last Thursday netted the same result, with

Mount Si losing 3-0. Liberty scored two goals in the first half, the first one

coming off the boot of Stephanie Hedien, assisted by Haley Regis, and the

second scored unassisted by Christine Mollet.

In the second half, Stephanie Ernst scored at the 75-minute mark, with

an assist from Mollet.

With the two losses, Mount Si’s record drops to 1-9, and the team is

in fourth place in the 3A KingCo Conference Valley Division.

Red Wolves notch second win

The Cedarcrest Red Wolves posted their second win of the season

last week by defeating the Interlake Saints, 28-7.

The first score of the game came on a punt return by Tommy

Harding. Harding took the punt on his own 45, then zigzagged his way to the end

zone for the score. The point-after attempt failed, making the score 6-0 in the

first quarter.

Interlake answered with a score of its own in the second quarter on a

13-yard pass play. With the extra point attempt, they had an early lead of 7-6.

But Cedarcrest would answer with a few more scores of its own,

despite Interlake having a 7-6 lead to end the half. A fumble by the Saints on

their own 25, set up Aaron O’Neal to burst from the 1-yard line. The 2-point

conversion made it a 14-7 game. The Red Wolves would add two more

scores in the fourth, the first on a Darren Carrido 16-yard run, and the

second on a Matt Geiger interception that was returned for a touchdown.

The Red Wolves will take on Liberty at home this Friday. Game

time is 7:30 p.m.

Bellevue defeats “C” team

Sometimes a moral victory is as good as a win. Wednesday was one

of those times. Even though Bellevue won the game 40-14, it was a

hard-fought battle. The offense scored its first points of the year and the

defense again kept the opponents’ offense from scoring in the second half.

Early in the game, the Bellevue Wolverine offense, on the

shoulders of their running back, pounded the end zone. Only minutes into the

second quarter the score was 28-0. The Red Wolves offense was feeling the

pressure all day. Midway through the second quarter, Matt Warner started

an offensive drive for Cedarcrest. He ran the ball up the middle on the

kickoff return and got to the 36-yard line.

Russell McGinnis started the drive on a draw play for 9 yards, and

then ran the ball again for 24 yards when he could not find an open receiver.

A loss of yardage on the next play could not stop the offensive machine.

The offensive line of Daniel Gustat, Sean Merz, Dashiell Hei, Kyle Carrigan

and Adam DeJarnett did what they could not do in the last two games —

keep the defense from the quarterback. Receivers Jake Ballingham,

Tyler Barnhardt, Paul Diediker and Gavin Harrold kept catching the ball.

Jake Ballingham caught the last pass of the drive for 12 yards and

the first offensive score of the year. The kicked extra point missed and

the score was 28-6.

At halftime, Bellevue still had a substantial lead, 34-6. Bellevue

continued to dominate, picking off passes and rushing for touchdowns.

The last Cedarcrest drive started with a 12-yard run by McGinnis.

It was followed by a short catch by Harrold. A pass-interference call

kept the drive alive and then McGinnis ran the ball again for 16 more yards.

A loss of yardage on a running play kept the ball in Cedarcrest territory but

another pass interference call put it into Bellevue’s side of the field. A

short pass to Barnhardt looked like it would get the team close to the end zone,

but he would not be denied and scored on a 29-yard pass play. A fake field

goal was set up and McGinnis passed to Harrold in the back of the end zone

to make the score 40-14. The Cedarcrest bench went wild.

“C” team loses to MI

The Cedarcrest Red Wolves “C” team put together more offense

this week, but it wasn’t enough as they dropped a game to the Islanders

46-14.

For the first half, Cedarcrest would move the ball for a few plays and

then punt. Mercer Island would run the ball outside and make plays for lots

of yardage. Then they would score. Near the end of the half, the score was

30-0.

On the last Cedarcrest drive of the half, the C-squad offense moved

the ball from its own 20-yard line to the end zone in just six plays. On the

first play, Paul Diediker caught a 2-yard pass. Then Gavin Harrold caught

an 8-yard pass, and the first down. He also caught the next pass for 57

yards. Tyler Barnhardt caught the fourth pass of the drive for 21 yards and

almost made it into the end zone. The fifth play of the drive was an

incomplete pass. Then McGinnis took the ball around the outside for two yards

and the score. The extra point missed wide and it was 30-6. Mercer Island

scored one more touchdown in the half to make it 38-6.

On the first play of the third quarter, Jake Ballingham took the

handoff from Matt Warner on a reverse. He was crushed by the defensive end, who

was pursuing Warner, and lay on the field in pain and confusion. Ballingham

had taken the hit to his hand, and his head, which kept him from playing the

rest of the game.

On the last drive of the game, Cedarcrest took the ball from its

own 25-yard line. Passes to Harrold of 10 yards and 60 yards took the ball

to Mercer Island’s 5-yard line. McGinnis took the ball into the end zone and

on the extra point, threw the two-point conversion to Harrold.

Golf team takes seventh

KingCo 3A golf held its medalist tournament last week at

Snohomish Golf Course. The Mount Si Wildcat golf team took seventh in team

scores with a 488. Cedarcrest took 10th with a 558.

For the Wildcats, Sean Fallows took sixth with a 76, Derek Lee

took 30th with a 78 and Sean Armstrong took 24th with a 78. All three

qualified for the district tournament held this past Monday. Details on this

were not available at press time.

Women defeat Interlake

The Cedarcrest Red Wolves soccer team defeated the Interlake

Saints last week, 6-0. Scoring for the Red Wolves was Sarah Gustat on an

assist by Lindsay Peterson, then Gustat again on an assist from Dana

Elwell. Elwell would score twice more followed by Renee Remedios

and Peterson adding more points. The Red Wolves are four and five, and are

in third place in the Valley Division behind Liberty and Sammamish.

`Cats defeat Sammamish

The Mount Si varsity volleyball team defeated the Sammamish

Totems last week in four games, 15-8, 15-6, 5-15 and 15-7. Stephanie Sales led

the team with seven kills, four aces, three blocks and three digs, while

teammate Jaclyn Boals had one kill and two digs. Chandra Rappin had one kill and

senior Heather Lewis had 11 kills, one ace, and 23 digs.

Katie Bankson had one kill and one dig. Teammate Lyndsey Hyatt

had five kills, one assist, one block and 11 digs. Jaymee Horstman had 10

kills, three assists, and seven digs, while junior, Kristen Everett, had thr
