‘Cats participate in Sequim tourney

The Mount Si wrestling team traveled to Sequim over the holiday break to participate in the Rainshadow tournament. They came home with a team score of 71.5, good enough for 12th place.

Standouts for Mount Si were Ryan Magnussen at 135 pounds, defeating Trent White, of Curtis, in a major decision, 12-3 to take fifth place. At 145 pounds, Ben Steel won by major decision of Justin Shelly of Kentlake 10-4 for fifth place. Pano Dreves lost by decision to Adam Macomber of Port Angeles 6-0 but still picked up fourth place at 152 pounds. Finally, in the 215-pound class, Trevor Moore lost by pin at the 5:47 mark to Brian Bonner from Anacortes but still took second place.


Gymnastics takes on Sammamish

Despite a week of no practice the Mount Si gymnastics team did well in individual performances. Casey Stinnett placed seventh in all-around competition and eighth on the beam. Merritt Kott placed sixth on the floor and sixth on the beam. Liana Felt placed seventh on the floor while teammate Megan Carlson placed fourth on the bars. Piper Sherbon, returning to the lineup after a vacation, took first on the bars and vault and second on the floor giving her first all around.


Cheerleaders take first in division

The Mount Si cheer squad brought home the first-place trophy in the co-ed division, after competing in the Sequoia Invitational tournament last week. Kristin Heath and Gerard Boulanger also took first in partner stunting at the competition. The squad has several upcoming competitions including the Oak Harbor Sprit Fest this weekend and the United Cheerleading Association (UCA) Emerald Cup at Sammamish High School on Jan. 31.


Wildcats blast Skyline

It took a total team effort to defeat the Spartans in wrestling last week as Mount Si notched a 53-27 victory. In the 103-pound class, Kyle Heath won by forfeit for Mount Si; at 112 pounds both teams recorded a forfeit; at 119 pounds, Wes Richards of Skyline pinned the Wildcats’ Dan Wright at the 2:29 mark; at 125 pounds, Jordan Sypher won by decision over Skylines’ Tyler Steciw, 6-3; at 130 pounds, the Wildcats’ Matt Haas won by technical fall over Tyler Stearns, 16-2; at 135 pounds Ryan Magnussen pinned Skyline’s Cliuff Kato at the 3:14 mark and brother Josh followed suit at 140 pounds with a pin of the Spartans Zach Schrader at the 3:00 mark; at 145-pounds, Ben Steel won by a 10-1 decision over the Spartans’ A.J. Kiss; at 152-pounds, the Wildcats’ Pano Dreves won by technical fall over Tyler Kirkland 20-5; at 160 pounds, the Spartans Mike Tobin won by decision over Mac Donnell 8-6; At 171 pounds, Seth Merritt pinned the Spartans Matt Schrader at the 3:11 mark; At 189 pounds, Mike Whelan pinned the Wildcats Jack Stinnett 43 seconds into the match; at 215 pounds the Wildcats Trevor Moore pinned Andy Rose at the 1:17 mark and at 275 pounds, Skylines Blake Kenyon won by forfeit. Mount Si moves to 3-0 while Skyline moves to 0-3.
