The week in sports

Golf

Sutton qualifies for districts

With six players hitting the links at the league tournament last week at Snohomish Golf Course, only one made it to the district tournament. Blaine Sutton qualified by shooting a 79. Sutton entered a playoff on the first hole with five other golfers competing for just two remaining spots. Sutton, a junior, calmly drained an eight-foot birdie putt to secure the 21st of 22 District tournament berths. Others playing in the league tournament were: senior Curtis Crabtree; sophomore Kyle Clearman; sophomore Kevin Englund; sophomore Remo Castagno; and sophomore Beau Davis. Mount Si came in eighth out of 10 teams with a score of 421.

Soccer

‘Cats down Issaquah

After suffering an embarrassing 5-0 loss to Issaquah a few weeks ago, the Wildcats’ varsity soccer team redeemed themselves with a 3-2 win at Issaquah. Issaquah scored their goals in the sixth and eighth minutes, but Mount Si came back with a goal by Ariel Wadell in the 10th minute. In the second half, Kristen Mills scored a goal in the 59th and 64th minutes for the win. Caitlin Braun held the lead in the second half from the goal keeper’s position by shutting down the Issaquah goal attempts.

Volleyball

‘C’ team defeats Skyline

The Mount Si “C” volleyball team beat Skyline recently in three games, 25-12, 18-25 and 15-7. Devyn Limestall had a great serving game with five aces. Brynn Hall had three kills while teammate Mikaila Fulfs had three kills and four aces. Megan Dance contributed five kills.

JV drops Spartans

The Mount Si JV volleyball team continued their winning streak with a dramatic three-set victory over the visiting Skyline Spartans, 23-25, 25-5 and 15-10.

Mount Si volleyball tops Newport in five games

The Wildcats came through this time, capping a tough stretch on their schedule with a five-game victory over the Knights. Game scores at Bellevue Community College were 25-21, 25-27, 25-20, 17-25, 15-5. In the decisive fifth game, Mount Si’s Katie Morgan, playing in her third varsity match, served nine consecutive winning points as the Wildcats (7-2 in the Valley Division) opened a 9-0 lead and never looked back.

Last week Mount Si lost five-game tussles with Skyline and Mercer Island. Wildcat coach Bonnie Foote said practices have since focused on situational play, either trying to close out a match or attempting to rally from a deficit.

“They were completely focused tonight,” Foote said. “I could see it in their eyes that (a five-game loss) wasn’t going to happen again. They believed they could do it.”

Kingco 3A kills leader Marissa Hill had 23 more against Newport, Jaclyn Boals added 15 kills and 26 digs, and setter Maggie Olson had 36 assists, six aces and 17 digs for Mount Si. Others contributing to the win were: Amy Keogh with two kills, one ace, one and a half blocks and three digs; Chandra Rappin had three kills and four digs; Amy White had 32 digs; Kayla Jayne had one ace and seven digs while Morgan added two aces and a dig; and Maggie Kuhath also had three assists and a dig.

JV team defeats Knights

With Asley Svarthumle leading the offensive with six kills, 10 digs and four aces, the Mount Si JV volleyball team defeated the Knights 25-20, 25-17 and 15-8.

Sam Riley added six kills, nine digs and two aces while Gina Zanella had 15 assists.

Football

‘C’ team crushes Saints

The Mount Si “C” football team dominated Interlake last week, bringing home the win 48-0. Brandon Yakabowski ran for 300 yards and scored numerous touchdowns. Dan Reeves also scored a touchdown on a run. Quarterback Ian Atkinson hit a wide open Sean Bothell for a touchdown as well.

The talented Gibson Bardsley added five extra points and also had an interception. The ‘Cats are now 4-2 this season.
