The week in sports

Cedarcrest falls to Bellevue

The Cedarcrest Red Wolves came out shooting last week, but

quarterback Nick Rich’s 10 of 19 completions failed to add enough offense for

the Lower Valley boys to defeat the Wolverines, losing 55-33.

The Red Wolves’ first scoring opportunity came on a pass from

Rich to Nathan McLallin from 26 yards out. Tommy Felts added the extra point

to tie the game at the 9:24 mark in the first quarter.

The Red Wolves would capitalize again early in the first quarter

after Colin Guthrie recovered a Bellevue fumble. Again Rich found

McLallin for his second touchdown of the game. But with the extra point attempt

failing, the score was 13-7 midway through the quarter.

Through the rest of the first quarter, and most of the second period,

it was Bellevue’s wing-T that gave the Red Wolves fits, allowing the

Wolverines to score two more touchdowns. Finally, late in the second quarter,

a poorly handled punt allowed the Red Wolves’ Tommy Harding to swoop

in and recover the ball in Bellevue territory. That set up Darren Carrido for

a rush from 36 yards out for the touchdown.

The Red Wolves followed with a try for a two-point conversion, but

it failed, leaving the score 21-19 near the end of the half. However, the

Wolverines’ offense would score once more before the teams headed to the

locker room, with the score 28-19 in favor of Bellevue.

Cedarcrest opened the second half on the upside. With fourth down

looming, backup quarterback Sean McDonald lined up as the back to

protect the punter. He then took the snap and threw to a sprinting

Tommy Harding, who scampered to the Bellevue 4-yard line. Aaron

O’Neal scored the touchdown two plays later to put the Red Wolves within

striking distance, 28-26.

The Red Wolves last score came midway through the fourth

quarter. Rich found his favorite receiver, McLallin, who then pushed his

way to the 1. From there, Rich scored on a quarterback sneak. But the

Wolverine offense kept the Red Wolves on their toes, and eventually allowed

Bellevue to head home with the win.
