“C” team falls to Issaquah
The new turf at Issaquah was not a hospitable surface for the
Cedarcrest “C” football team, which lost 36-0,
the last week of September.
Issaquah scored first with a long scamper and a 2-point conversion
to take an early 8-0 lead. The Indians played stifling defense, stopping
the Cedarcrest offense in the half. Running backs Eli Hotchkiss and
Russell McGinnis could not run the ball, and quarterback Jacob Ballingham
could not get the ball to any receivers.
During the entire game, the offense had only one first down, giving
the punter, McGinnis, an opportunity to sharpen his skills.
Special-team players also had their chances to improve their skills
during the game. The kickoff return team returned five kickoffs in the first half
and one in the second. Hotchkiss and James Ihlenfeldt ran well behind
the blocking of the kickoff team. Ihlenfeldt also made two huge
gains on kickoff reverses.
The first one put Cedarcrest in Issaquah territory, but ended after
a fourth down. With two big pass plays and three sustained drives,
Issaquah had scored 36 unanswered points by the end of the first half.
The second half saw an improved Cedarcrest defense. The defensive
line of Joe Richards, Sean Merz, Adam DeJarnett, Ricky Cardin,
Ihlenfeldt and Andrew Ihlenfeldt (substituted in groups of four) kept the Issaquah
offense at bay.
At inside linebacker positions, Jared McKie and Jason Zeigler
helped keep the runs short, and from the cornerback position, Mark
Hensel made tackles and even recovered a fumble.
Matt Warner missed an interception on what could have been the
one scoring opportunity of the game for Cedarcrest. A quick pass hit his
chest as he was getting into position, while an open field lay before him, had
he been able to get his hands on the ball.
Besides the defense having a good second half, there were other
positives to the game. The only fumbles made were recovered by Cedarcrest – one
a recovery of their own fumble and one a recovery of Issaquah’s.
Mount Si falls to Issaquah
The Mount Si volleyball team was defeated by Issaquah in four
games last week, 9-15, 15-1, 15-4 and 15-8. Leading the effort for the Wildcats
was Heather Lewis, who recorded six kills, one ace, one block and 18 digs.
Teammate Lyndsey Hyatt had three kills, two blocks and 10 digs, while
Jaymee Horstman had three kills, one ace, two blocks and five digs and
Kristen Everett had 19 assists, three aces and seven digs. Dana Luizzo recorded
four kills, one block and 13 digs, while teammate Randilinn Cason had
four kills, two aces and five digs.
Bellevue defeats Red Wolves
The Red Wolves volleyball team dropped another match last week
to Bellevue. The Wolverines took Cedarcrest in four games, 15-12,
6-15, 15-11 and 15-8, For the Red Wolves, Megan Townsend
recorded seven kills, two aces, two blocks and nine digs, and teammate
Stephanie Hern had one kill, 13 assists, five aces and seven digs. Dorothy
Westermann had two kills, one ace, one block and 10 digs. Julie Henry had two kills,
two aces and eight digs, while Kara Lawson had three kills, two aces
and two blocks. Christa Swanlund rounded out the team effort with one kill,
four blocks and two digs.
Interlake defeats `Cats
The Mount Si varsity tennis team dropped a match to Interlake
last week, 7-2. Jacob Waggoner recorded the only singles win for the
Wildcats, defeating the Saints Gary Dvosis in two sets, 6-3, 6-3. In doubles play,
the team of Darren DeBoer and Brandon Bumpus defeated Yusuke Naano
and Dvosis 8-6.
Cedarcrest defeats Newport
The Cedarcrest Volleyball team defeated Newport last week in
three games, 15-11, 15-11 and 15-4. Leading the efforts for the Red Wolves
was Julie Henry who recorded three kills, 15 assists, six aces, one block and
10 digs. Teammate Kara Lawson had seven kills, two aces and six
digs. Megan Townsend had three kills, three assists, two aces, one block and
two digs. Christa Swanlund recorded five kills, three blocks and one dig.
Maile Marsh had two kills and four digs. The win puts the Red Wolves on top of
the Valley Division with five wins and three losses.
`Cats defeat Bellevue
Mount Si recorded another volleyball win last week, defeating
Bellevue in three games. Heather Lewis lead the effort with 10 kills, one ace and
19 digs. Lyndsey Hyatt had three kills, two aces and 16 digs.
Jaymee Horstmand had 10 kills, one ace, one block and 10 digs, while
Kristen Everett had two kills, 29 assists, three blocks and eight digs. First-year
player Dana Luizzo, a senior, had one ace, two blocks and 12 digs.
Randilinn Cason had six kills, one ace and eight digs. The win left Mount Si third
in the Valley Division with a record of three wins and five losses.
Skyline defeats Red Wolves
The Skyline golf team defeated Cedarcrest last week at Carnation
Golf Course 188-226. For the Red Wolves, Pat Beveridge shot a 44, Orie
Short 41, Jason Kamada 44, John Riley 49 and Walter Robinson 48.
Newport defeats Mount Si
The Mount Si women’s cross-country team put in an impressive
performance last week against Newport but couldn’t pull out a team
victory, losing 17-46.
Sheena Kern led Mount Si with a time of 20:49 for fourth place. She
was the only top 10 finisher for the Wildcats.
Bellevue defeats Cedarcrest
The women’s Cedarcrest cross-country team fell to Bellevue last
week 21-38. Kelly Ramirez took second for the Red Wolves with a time of
21:10. Yingxuan Law took fifth with a time of 21:56. Hanah Wright took
eighth with a time of 23:26.
Cedarcrest men defeat Bellevue
The Red Wolves men’s cross-country team defeated Bellevue
last week in an impressive performance. Leading the pack was James
Conrick who turned in a time of 17:03, a course record. Danny Abel took third with
a time of 17:36. Chris Lee took fifth with a time of 18:02. Pat Conrick
took sixth with a time of 18:13, and Ian Wright took 10th with a time of 18:35.
Mount Si drops meet to Newport
The Mount Si men’s cross-country team fell to Newport last week
20-41. Leading for the `Cats was Payton Thompson, who was also
named Homecoming King, with a time of 17:34. Joe Eib took fifth with a
time of 17:50 to become the only other runner to finish in the top 10.
Tennis team drops one to Skyline
The Mount Si Men’s tennis team dropped its match against Skyline
last week 6-3. Winning in singles play for the `Cats was Ben DeBoer, who
defeated Julian Wilhelm 1-6, 6-1, 6-1. Jacob Waggoner defeated Jason
Edgar in two sets, 7-5, 6-4. In doubles play, the team of DeBoer and
Brandon Bumpus defeated Mike Gangiand Tigram Sarkissian in three sets,
1-6, 6-4, 7-5. Mount Si has one win and six losses for the season.
Red Wolves fall to Islanders
The Cedarcrest Red Wolves faced a tough Mercer Island team last
week, with the Islanders notching another win 34-3. Early in the game, the
Islanders went to work on the Red Wolves quarterback, Nick Rich,
picking off a pass and running it into the end zone. The point after made
the score 7-0 and gave the Islanders the lead for the rest of the game.
David Kirtman would add another touchdown in the first quarter, making
the score 14-0 with the extra point.
