The week in sports

Saints blast Red Wolves

A big storm was the weather prediction for the night.

When Cedarcrest’s football team arrived, it was clear and cool but not stormy.

That was the calm before the storm. Only the storm was not the weather; it

was a team called Interlake. When the squall had ended, the final score

was 22-55 in favor of the Saints.

Interlake started the game with the ball. They began at their own

31-yard line with a 17-yard run to the outside, ended three plays later in the end

zone. With the extra point the score was quickly 7-0.

Cedarcrest seemed to start the game well on offense, too. The

rush on the passer forced Russell McGinnis out of the pocket and he scrambled

for 40 yards. Unfortunately, his run ended in a fumble, which Interlake

recovered on its own 35-yard line. After a touchdown was called back, and they

appeared stalled at their own 25-yard line, the Saints busted one open

for another touchdown. The extra point was good making the score 14-0.

A sack for a 2-yard loss started Cedarcrest’s next possession. A

6-yard pass to a new running back, Andrew Ihlenfeldt, made it second and 6

on the Cedarcrest 28. Another scramble by the quarterback netted 14 yards,

but it ended in a fumble and it was Interlake’s first down at the

Cedarcrest 42-yard line.

Interlake again started its possession with an incomplete pass, but

it was quickly followed by another rushing touchdown in the first quarter.

Cedarcrest began on its own 19-yard line. A pass to Gavin Harrold

put the ball on the 27. An offside penalty moved the ball almost back to

the original line of scrimmage, then lightning struck a third time.

Another fumble was recovered by Interlake on its own 21-yard line.

The Cedarcrest defense seemed to make Interlake work harder on its

next possession. The first run netted 13 yards. A penalty moved the ball

back to the Cedarcrest 13 and it took two runs to move the ball into the end

zone. The score was 28-0 with little time left in the first quarter.

Good coverage on the ensuing kickoff put Cedarcrest in a deep

hole. The offense was given possession on its own 9-yard line. McGinnis

was again forced to scramble from the pocket but was caught in the end

zone for a safety, making the score 30-0.

Cedarcrest kicked the ball from the 20-yard line and Interlake started

its next drive from its own 48. A fumble was recovered by the quarterback

for a loss of 1 yard and the quarter ended. Interlake tried to run around the

end again but got caught by Matt Warner for a loss of another 7 yards.

Interlake gained back 4 yards and punted on the next play. The defense had held

the Interlake offense to a net negative 4 yards.

Cedarcrest began its first real drive of the game on its own 42-yard

line. Ihlenfeldt ran for 4 yards, then McGinnis ran for another 3. An

incomplete pass was followed with a long scramble by

McGinnis. Cedarcrest was into Interlake territory. Ihlenfeldt ran again to move the

ball from the Interlake 37 to the 36. Another incomplete pass followed,

then a long pass to Gavin Harrold put the ball into the end zone. The kicked

extra point by Paul Diediker was called good and the score was 30-7.

Interlake capped its first half scoring with a 35-yard field goal to

make it a 33-7 ball game.

Cedarcrest struck first in the second half. The offense started the

drive at its own 35-yard line. McGinnis ran for one yard on the first play and

then connected with Eli Hotchkiss for a 64-yard touchdown pass. Two

unsportsmanlike penalties were called on Interlake to move the ball to the

half-yard line for the point after touchdown. The first two-point

conversion was run in by McGinnis, but called back for an unsportsmanlike penalty

– taunting. The ball was moved back to the 15-yard line for another

attempt. This time, the pass to Harrold was caught for the 2 points, making

the score 33-15.

Interlake scored twice quickly and kept the momentum in its favor.

With the two touchdowns, the score was 48-15.

Ihlenfeldt again ran the ball well for 7 yards on the first play of the

next Cedarcrest possession. Two incomplete passes followed to make it

third and short. McGinnis took the ball on a bootleg for the first down and

more. He weaved and bobbed to run the length of the field for a 63-yard

touchdown. The extra point was called good and the score went to 48-22.

The Saints would score one more time before the contest was over

for the 55-22 win.

Red Wolves pull out long win

The Cedarcrest Red Wolves’ women’s volleyball team was

down two games with zero wins before mounting their comeback and

defeating the Mount Si Wildcats in five games, 8-15, 10-15, 15-7, 15-12

and 15-13.

For the Red Wolves, Megan Townsend had 10 kills, two aces,

one assist, two blocks and six digs. Maile Marshall had 10 kills, two aces

and 22 digs. Dorothy Westermann had three kills, two aces and 18 digs

while teammate Stepahnie Hern had two kills, 27 assists and 13 digs.

Christa Swanlund had four kills and seven blocks. Danielle Devoille had one

kill, two aces and four digs. Chrissy Byrne had three kills, one ace, two blocks

and five digs.

11 digs. Teammate Heather Lewis, in her last home appearance, had 18 kills,

32 digs and two aces. Lyndsey Hyatt had six kills, three aces, one block and

20 digs. Jaymee Horstman had three kills, one ace, one block and seven

digs. Kristen Everett had two kills, 38 assists, one ace, two blocks and

three digs. Finally, Dana Luizzo, a senior who was also in her last home

appearance had one kill, two aces, two blocks and 14 digs.

`Cats finish season

The Mount Si volleyball team ended its season at last week’s

KingCo tournament with a loss to Issaquah, 15-7, 15-5. Stephanie Sales led the

effort with three kills, two blocks and five digs. Heather Lewis had nine

kills and eight digs. Jaymee Horstman had two kills and two digs. Kristen

Everett had one kill, 15 assists and one ace. Dana Luizzo had one kill, as

did Randilinn Cason. The team will be losing only two seniors, which

should make them a dominant force in next year’s play.

Cedarcrest falls to Newport

In first round action at last week’s KingCo Volleyball tournament,

the Cedarcrest red Wolves fell to the Newport Knights, 15-8 and 15-6.

Dorothy Westemann had one ace and five digs while teammate Megan Townsend

had three kills, one block and six digs. Christa Swanlund had one kill and

two blocks. Maile Marshall had one ace and eight digs. Stephanie Hern

had one kill, four assists, one ace and one dig.

Four heading to state

Four Valley athletes will be heading to state for cross-country

after qualifying at last week’s Sea-King district meet. For the Red Wolves,

James Conrick came in sixth with a time of 16:16.01 and teammate Kelly

Ramirez came in ninth with a time of 19:57.09.

For the Wildcat’s, Payton Thompson came in 21st with a time

of 16:40.04 and teammate Sheena Kern came in 12th with a time of 20:10.00.

Red Wolves hold Skyline down

Facing a team that typically annihilates their opponents, the

Cedarcrest Red Wolves did well against the Spartans, losing 28-7.

As impossible as it may seem to hold the Spartans scoreless, that

is exactly what happened by the end of the first quarter, neither team

had scored and constant pressure on the Spartans’ quarterback had kept

their air attack grounded. The Red Wolves went on the scoreboard first in the

second quarter as Ben Frey picked off a pass and rambled to the Skyline

40-yard line. Three plays later, Aaron O’Neal found the endzone from

three yards out. The extra point kick was added and the Red Wolves

found themselves on top of the undefeated Spartans.

The Spartans answered quickly in the second quarter, adding a

touchdown of their own. They followed with another after a Red Wolves’

turnover and went up 14-7 with 2:14 left in the first half.
