SVAL presents one-act comic opera

Published 10:35 am Thursday, October 2, 2008

A modernized, English language version of “Mozart Impressario,” featuring Chamber Opera Northwest, is an entertaining one-act comic opera on the bill for Snoqualmie Valley Arts Live’s next concert set for 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 29, in the Mount Si High School Theater. Rounding out the program will be a selection of traditional and contemporary works ranging from Mozart to Stravinsky to Northwest composers sung by a talented Chamber Opera Northwest quartet.

Making opera accessible and enjoyable is a mission for Chamber Opera Northwest, a touring company directed by soprano Marianne Weltmann, who has a rich background as a singer and teacher. She has sung in opera, concert and on radio in Germany, Italy, Austria and the United States and has taught singing at the university level as well as continuing to perform and to teach in her Seattle studio. Other Chamber Opera voices are Linda Rough, mezzo soprano; Stuart Lutzenhiser, tenor; Brian Box, bass; and Elizabeth Ripley and Teri Drinkwater, sopranos. All have strong credentials and deep involvement in their field, both locally and nationally.

That they all enjoy what they are doing and succeed in making opera accessible is evident in their performance of the delightful, beautifully costumed “Impressario,” as well as in the satisfying selection of numbers sung by the quartet – all with piano accompaniment. This concert is a unique opportunity for audiences of all ages to experience this historic art form, and to meet and talk with the artists following the program.

Tickets are available at Video Nites in Fall City; Isadora’s in Snoqualmie; and Nature’s Marketplace in North Bend. Ticket prices for regular admission are $15; seniors $10; and youth $5.
