Top finish for
da Ponte
North Bend resident Drake da Ponte ran to a USA Track and Field national championship in the 11-12 boys 3,000-meter run with a time of 10 minutes, 30.91 seconds.
Running in the midwest Omaha heat, da Ponte ran a strategic race, taking the lead at four laps and distancing himself from the group. He ultimately won by twelve seconds.
Da Ponte’s powerful 3000-meter championship run came a day after an excellent 800-meter preliminary race in which he finished just out of the medals with a time of 2:22.59, good for ninth place. He missed the final by 0.8 seconds, but the race acted as a huge confidence builder for the 3,000-meter.
On the final day of competition, da Ponte competed in the 1,500-meter run, rounding out his Junior Olympics experience with a 10th-place finish in a time of 4:55.73. The young runner’s next competition will be in Hershey, Penn., for the North American Hershey Youth Track and Field Championships on Saturday, Aug. 10.
“I didn’t really know any of the other runners,” said da Ponte from his home. “There was one guy that ran a 10:29 at regionals, which was only three seconds off my best time, so I thought I could beat him.
“I ran a 11:02 at regionals because it was 107 degrees. In Omaha it was 90 degrees with 80 percent humidity. I didn’t let it bother me but it did bother some other kids,” he continued. “The kid that ran the 10:29 at regionals took second. My uniform was soaked and I was really hot at the end. I think I was deyhydrated.”
