Chief Kanim announces Presidential Fitness Awards

The Chief Kanim physical education department would like to recognize those students who ranked among the elite in the Presidential Fitness Challenge. The following students were tested in muscular strength, endurance, flexibility and speed, and scored high enough to earn the Presidential Fitness Award.

Students earning presidential status are: Ariane Barr, Alisha Fischer, Joe Taklo,       Evan Hickam, Nic Caffroy, Jody Poth, Sean Bothell, Mikel Ushler, David Carlson, Clint Irving, Dereck Hanneman, Jay Dochnal, Nick Donate, Eric Forslin, Sarah Lewis, Lacey Blais, Kali Roestal, Katrina Zwick, Hillary Burk, Ian Adams, Catherine Vitolo, Eric Alexander, Faith Hutcherson and Miles Whitaker.


Pony to hold sign-ups

Pony baseball will be holding league sign-ups soon. Children ages 13-16 can participate.

Athay continues competition

Michelle Athay, age 9, from North Bend, competed in two gymnastic invitationals recently.

In the New Year’s Invitational, hosted by the Northshore Gymnastics Center in Woodinville, she took first in her age group. She scored a 9.1 in the vault, 8.9 in the uneven bars, 9.3 on the balance beam and 9 in the floor routine.

She then competed in the Flips Invitational hosted by Flips USA Gymnastics of Reno, Nev. There she took tenth overall, but placed first in the balance beam with a score of 9.5.

Football looking for help

The Sno-Valley Junior Football Association is looking for board members and coaches for the upcoming season. Be a part of making football happen this fall for kids ages 7-14 in the Snoqualmie Valley, from North Bend to Duvall. Little League to host clinic

Snoqualmie Valley Little League will be hosting two clinics on March 21 and 23 for players and coaches. Leading the clinics is baseball coach Tom Dedin who has been involved in baseball for over 40 years. He is the assistant athletic director at Regis University in Illinois and has coached at Regis for 12 years. In 1989, Dedin was selected to coach TEAM USA, America’s senior national team that was composed of the top 25 collegiate baseball players in the country.

The first clinic will be for coaches. The focus will be talking and teaching fundamentals. Once the fundamentals have been learned, coaches can use and reinforce them within their teams.

For the youth clinic the focus will be on throwing, fielding and hitting, highlighting the fundamentals of each. Players will be broken up into groups of 10 with coaches and staff teaching. The price for the youth session is $50 and will run both Saturday and Sunday.

Dedin is well known for his coaching abilities and has sent many players to the Major Leagues. To register for the clinic contact Snoqualmie Valley Little League at (425) 888-1518.


Hub to begin wrestling club

Snoqualmie Valley Youth Hub is starting a Wildcat wrestling club. The club is for children ages 6-12, and is intended to be an introduction to the fundamentals of wrestling. Registration is from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, in the Mount Si High School gymnasium. Practices begin March 13, from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m., also at Mount Si High. Practices will end April 24. There will be five practices and one tournament during the last week. Wrestlers are to bring proper shoes (wrestling or tennis shoes), shorts and a T-shirt. Each wrestler will receive a club T-shirt and tournament ribbon.

Tawney starting for UW

Mount Si graduate and fast-pitch standout, Traci Tawney, is expected to be a regular starter for the University of Washington fast-pitch team. She started 27 games in 2001 in both right field and at first base. UW coach Teresa Wilson expects Tawney to start most of this season in right field. “Traci will see most of her time in the outfield this year, where she has the capability of making the nearly impossible play look routine,” said Wilson.

Tawney is a speech-communications major at the UW and is contemplating a profession in teaching. While playing for Mount Si, she earned first-team all-league honors and all KingCo honors. She graduated from Mount Si in 1999 and calls Fall City home. Her parents are Mike and Renae Tawney of Fall City.


North American Youth Sports to hold annual spring youth basketball tournaments

North American Youth Sports announced that it will hold its annual spring basketball tournament at Auburn High School, April 12 – 14.

This tournament will feature ten different brackets. They include fifth-and sixth-grade boys, fifth-and sixth-grade girls, seventh-grade boys, seventh-grade girls, eighth-grade girls, eighth-grade boys, ninth and tenth-grade boys, ninth-and tenth-grade girls, eleventh-and twelfth-grade boys and eleventh -and twelfth-grade girls.

All grades are based on the grade in which the student is currently enrolled.

The entry fee for this tournament is $95 and guarantees each team a minimum of two games with awards presented in each bracket. Entry deadline is March 22.

Ten Star to hold basketball camp

Applications are now being evaluated for the Ten Star All Star Summer Basketball Camp. The camp is by invitation only and is for boys and girls, ages 10-19.

Past participants include Michael Jordan, Tim Duncan, Vince Carter, Jerry Stackhouse, Grant Hill and Antwan Jamison. Players from 48 states and seven foreign countries attended the 2001 camp. Camp locations include Olympia.
