Duo wins at Baja

North Bend residents Andrew Hassard and Greg Roark won the

Baja Challenge off-road car race last week.

This race featured eight identical cars pitted against each other.

Hassard and Roark finished in first place over other teams that included

professional racers such as Roberto Guerrero and Mike Groff.

They placed 86th overall out of more than 270 entries in the

Baja 2000, the largest off-road race ever, which runs nearly 1,700 miles

from Ensenada to Cabo San Lucas.

Mount Si gymnastics clinic

Children will have a chance to see what those bars and beams are

about at the fundraising clinic for the gymnastics team at Mount Si High

School on Saturday, Dec. 9. There will be two sessions, one at 9 a.m. and one at

10:30 a.m.

Students between the ages of 3 and 12 will be individually paired with

a gymnastics team member and will be able to try all the gymnastics

events: bars, beam, floor and vault. There will also be exhibitions by the Mount

Si gymnastics team. Cost is $10 per session.

Local runners excel

Three members of the Issaquah Gliders cross-country team placed

in the top 20 at the regional cross-country championships on Nov. 18,

at Seattle’s Woodland Park.

A top 20 finish qualifies the runners for the Youth Jr Olympics

Cross-Country Meet, to be held in Reno, Nev. on Dec. 9.

In the 9- to 10-year-old boy’s division, Drake da Ponte placed first

for the approximately 2.2 mile course with a time of 11:32. The

second-place finisher ran the course in 12:04. Da Ponte will be joined at the

national cross-country meet by teammates Eric Walsh, who placed fourth with a

time of 12:20, and Justin Englund, placing seventh with a time of 12:35.

Other Gliders in the 9- to 10-year-old boy’s division were Matthew Molina,

coming in 44th with a time of 14:49, and Shawn Paskey, who came in 45th

with a time of15:01.

In the 9- to 10-year-old girl’s division, Katie Luna placed 44th with

a time of 15:59, and Lauren Englund was 50th with a time of 16:58.

In the 13- to 14-year-old boy’s division, Lorenzo Molina placed

38th with a time of 15:28 for 2.5 miles.

SVLL gearing up

Snoqualmie Valley Little League is gearing up for the 2001 season

and needs your help. The board meets at 7:30 on the first and third Tuesdays

of every month, at the North Bend depot.

If you are interested in attending a meeting or obtaining more

information, contact the league at (425) 888-1518.

Registration is tentatively scheduled for January and February,

with tryouts starting in mid-March. All youth between the ages 5_17 are

welcome to join.
