Second in state to rebuilding the program

SNOQUALMIE VALLEY – Garrick Phillips, in his fourth year as the Mount Si boys’ golf coach, has his work cut out for him this year. His team finished second in state last year, led by senior Sean Armstrong. But his top four players were lost to graduation, an inevitable reality that makes each year unique.

Last year, the team recorded seven wins and two losses, was second in KingCo and third at district.

Forty players signed up to play golf this year with only 14 spots available on the roster. So besides coaching a young team, Phillips had to make some tough decisions on who to cut. Luckily, he does have two seniors to lead the team: returning varsity player Andy Divers and newcomer Jorge Cerda.

Divers is excited about the season but also realizes the team will be inexperienced. “It doesn’t bother me that much. I was hoping there would be more seniors,” he said. “This year is going to be a trial year with so many young players. I figure all these young players will get some experience in tournaments, which will make future teams better.”

Divers’ goals after graduation include golf, with the hope that a scholarship might be available from some college. His eventual plans are to get into graphic design.
