Rebels defeat Wildcats

The Juanita Rebels used strong efforts by guard Jenny Hager and forward Cele White to defeat the Mount Si Wildcats 55-45 in non-league girls’ basketball action last Tuesday at Mount Si High School.

Hager led all scorers with 27 points, and White chipped in with 18 for the Rebels.

It looked as if Mount Si might be able to start where it left off defensively after the previous loss to Eastside Catholic Nov. 24, but White took over right away and scored six straight points in the first quarter to help put the Rebels in front after one quarter 16-7.

The second quarter saw Hager bust out and take control for Juanita. She scored 14 of her 27 points in this quarter alone, and the Rebels were up 32-21 at half.

The Wildcats continued their strong defensive push, and behind the offensive efforts of forward Lizzie Finnegan and guard/forward Rachel Travis got to within four points of Juanita, but Hager and White shut that down with a quick 6-0 run late in the third quarter. The two Rebels combined to score all of their team’s points in the quarter. The ‘Cats let Hager get away on a couple of fast-break baskets and the Rebels were up 46-33 after three.

Juanita was on cruise control from this point, as Mount Si couldn’t get any closer despite two Rebel shot-clock violations. Hager and White led the Rebels on a 7-2 run late to seal the victory for Juanita, a KingCo 4A school from Kirkland.

Finnegan had 14 points, and guard Nicci Landdeck had 10 points to pace the Wildcats’ attack. Travis also chipped in eight to help out in the losing cause for Mount Si.

The Wildcats fell to 0-2 before playing Saturday night in Gig Harbor against Peninsula.
