The Mount Si Wildcats used strong defense to wear down and overpower the Mercer Island Islanders 49-35 in a Kingco 3A Conference girls’ basketball game last week at Mount Si High School. Islander senior guard Beth Richards led all scorers with 15 points, but it was the Wildcats’ defense that stood tall, holding the Islanders scoreless in the second quarter.

“That was our goal tonight, to hold [Mercer Island] to less points than against Bellevue, Issaquah and all them,” said senior post Nicci Landdeck. “And we came out and we attained our goal.”

Junior forward Landa Pastrana credits her team’s preparation for the stellar effort.

“We’ve been working on defense a lot this year and that’s been our main goal,” said Pastrana. “And so to hold a team like that is a big success.”

Fellow junior post Karin Brevick added that the defense in the second half was just as important.

“We wanted to come out in the third quarter and have great intensity and we did it,” said Brevick. “We did it. We got it. It was great.”

Landdeck was one of two Mount Si players who scored 10 points to lead the way for the Wildcats. Landdeck is now 39 points short of 1,000 for her career. Despite the magnitude of her eventual accomplishment, Landdeck doesn’t feel any pressure and continues to offer her teammates praise.
