Mount Si remains undefeated

The Mount Si High School wrestling team’s perfect
season remains intact after beating the Sammamish Wildcats last
Thursday 62-10. The Wildcats won 11 of 14 matches, which
included five pins and four forfeits.
Jason Rothgeb won by decision in the 103-pound
weight class. In the 112-pound class, Jordan Prior posted a win
against Clayton Cuttitte. Jeff Stone pinned John Nordeck in the
135-pound weight class at 3:12, while Hiram Tame, wrestling in the
145-pound weight class, pinned Sammamish’s Jake Nordeck
at 3:14. Stone said he wants to improve upon last year’s
fourth-place finishes at the league and regional championships.
“Hopefully I can place higher this year; Issaquah and
Interlake will be tough to beat,” he said.
Mount Si’s wins against Sammamish also included a
pin at 2:45 by Jed McDaniels against Mike D’Angelo in the
171-pound weight class. Brad Davis had a lightning-like pin in 37
seconds against Mike Guentzer in the 189-pound weight class.
“I plan on being a league champion, a regional
champion and place in the top six at state,” Davis said of the postseason.
Achieving all of these goals would not only be a great
feat, but also a remarkable improvement on his third-place finish
in league and fourth at regionals last year.
Chad Mills won his match last Thursday by forfeit. He
would like to see a repeat win for Mount Si at league and a district
championship.
“I think we have a really good chance,” Mills said.
Dylan Seubert and Brad Connor in the 215- and
275-pound weight classes also won by forfeit.
Coach Bruce Caldwell said this is the first time Mount Si
has won the 3A KingCo dual-meet title. The team will battle for
a third consecutive league title this weekend at Liberty High
School. The top five wrestlers from the meet in each weight class go
on to the district-championship tournament the following weekend
at Liberty High School, where they will compete against the
Metro and Seamount leagues. The top five finishers at the district
championship advance to the state meet in Tacoma.
Because of the top-five selection process, Caldwell said
the next few meets are unique because each new level will consist of
only the very best wrestlers.
“We are just stepping it up a notch (in the next few weeks) as
a team,” said Mount Si’s 145-pound wrestler, Tame. “We can’t let
up and slack at all.”
