The Wildcat wrestling team put their best foot forward, looking strong against the top-10 ranked Red Wolves, but fell short as Cedarcrest moved one step closer to becoming dual meet champions, winning, 46-22.

Robbie Westermann (189), Vong Ly (215), Conner Baker (112), Aaron Pedeferri (125) and Adam Speir (171) all won by pin for the Red Wolves. But two previously undefeated Cedarcrest wrestlers fell victim to the Wildcats’ attack. David Howard at 119 pounds fell to Mount Si’s Matt Haas 6-5, and Cody Hudson fell to the Wildcats’ veteran, Nick Martindale 10-3.

Starting off the competition for the night was Robby Westermann against Trevor Moore. Moore put up a fight early but Westermann is a third-in-state veteran and pinned Moore with 17 seconds to go in the first round. Vong Ly followed suit for Cedarcrest at 215 pounds, pinning the Wildcat’s D.J. Johnson with nine seconds to go in the first round. Cedarcrest forfeited at 275 pounds to give Mount Si their first points of the meet.

At 103 pounds, Mike Montgomery dominated the match for the Wildcats eventually recording a 19-5 major decision over the Red Wolves’ Jacob Gremmert. Montgomery wrestled his opponent tight the entire match, scoring several near pins. Cedarcrest came back with a pin in the 112-pound class as Conner Baker pinned the Wildcats’ Nick Donate with 16 seconds left in the first round.

At 119 pounds it was two longtime rivals that took to the mat as the Wildcats’ Matt Haas and Cedarcrest’s Howard battled it out. Howard scored first with a technical point followed by a takedown. In the second round, starting from the down position, Howard pulled a reversal on Matt Haas for two more points and a 5-0 lead. Midway through the round, Matt Haas scored a reversal of his own and a two-point nearfall. As the clock ticked down to seven seconds in the third round, Haas pulled out a reversal and the win, giving Howard a taste of defeat for the first time this season.
