Mount Si boys sweep Lower Valley rival

The Mount Si Wildcats’ seniors celebrated their final regular season home game with style last Tuesday with a 73-53 thumping of Valley rival Cedarcrest High School.

The victory completed the season sweep of the Red Wolves and for senior guard/forward Casey Hough, it was icing on the cake. Hough, who celebrated his 18th birthday that night, Feb 4, got a lot of help from fellow seniors Eric Hensley, John Karlen, Logan Ratcliffe and Chris Lyle in making his birthday wish come true.

Ratcliffe led Mount Si with 15 points, while junior guard Hank Kennedy added 14 to pace the Wildcats. As for the Red Wolves, junior Russell McGinnis led all scorers with 18 points, while fellow junior Ross Gomes paced the Wolves with 12.

Several Mount Si students held up signs making note of Hough’s special day, and he thanked them with a sparkling fourth quarter effort capped by a dunk. Hough, who finished the night with 11 points, said the dunk was suggested by coach Garrick Phillips, who during fifth-period told the senior to work for the shot.

“It was sweet too, because me and Hank [Kennedy] have both been wanting to get a dunk in the same game. That’s the first time it’s happened,” Hough said.

The game opened with the Wildcats starting all five of their seniors. Cedarcrest opened up the scoring 1:04 into the game with a basket from senior Kyle Eldred. The Red Wolves maintained the lead until halfway through the first period, when Ratcliffe hit a basket to put Mount Si up 8-6. Mount Si would not relinquish the lead for the rest of the game.
