Chief Kanim wraps up season

The Chief Kanim Middle School wrestling team finished another season, hosting the annual Foothills League Tournament at Mount Si High School on Jan. 19. The team sent three wrestlers to the championship round. Returning champion Gavin Hamblin brought home another undefeated season and first-place finish at 115 pounds. At 90 pounds, eighth-grader Jacob Lund finished second ending an impressive season and career at Chief Kanim. Hunter Woldseth brought home a second-place finish and a 7-2 record at 175 pounds.

Dallas Liebe, Stuart Hallock and Ryan Makela each placed fourth in the tournament. Chief Kanim coaches were extremely excited on the improvements the three wrestlers made over the last few weeks of competition.

Wrestlers Joe Milks, Thomas Hunt, Matt Kinsman and RW Johnston placed fifth in their weight classes as well. Connor Hollis, Matt VanOurek and John Milks also participated in the varsity tournament.

Although the season didn’t yield a winning record at 1-5, coaches Tony Schlotfeldt, Vince Vasquez and Eddie Roberts were extremely proud of the improvements the young team made. The team will be ready to compete next year with a solid group of sixth and seventh-grade wrestlers moving into varsity positions.

The sixth-grade team brought home a handful of awards at the league tournament. Vince Vasquez, Aaron Moetului, Josh Myers and Andrew Sypher placed first in their weight classes. Lee Amador, Talyor Yotz, Frank Tassara and Tony Hanna placed second for the sixth-grade team. Keith Barnum placed third on the day, and Chris Clark, Royce Clark, Patrick MacEldowney and Harley Carroll placed fourth. At the junior-varsity level Matt Herman brought home a third place finish, while Brett Imsland and Jon Larson both placed fourth.


Hawks fall to SMS

The Chief Kanim Middle School Hawks seventh-grade basketball team traveled to Snoqulamie Middle School recently where they lost 40-35. The Hawks got off to a fast start thanks to Madison Yakabowski’s three-pointers and Vica Falcon’s rebounding, but couldn’t hold off the Eagles’ relentless press. Hawks stars included: Madison Yakabowski with 27 points, Vica Falcon with eight points and eight rebounds, Nikki Stanton with two steals, Jessica Paladihni with two rebounds, Kayla Stewart with four rebounds, Cassidy Will with two assists, Mackenzie Peerboom with two rebounds and Miranda Pratt with two rebounds.

Team awards went to Stewart and Pratt for Most Improved, Will for Most Inspirational, Falcon for Best Hustle, Stanton for Best Defensive and Yakabowski for Most Valuable Player. Yakabowski set school records for points in a season at 235 with an average of 29.4 points per game. She also set the record for most three-point field goals with 29 and steals with 58.


Eagles fall to Hawks

The Snoqualmie Middle School eighth-grade JV girls’ basketball team was defeated 20-16 in overtime against the Chief Kanim Middle School Hawks. Kacie McKernan was the high scorer with six points. The team also handed out season awards with Brooke Nicholson getting Most Inspirational, Adriana Hernandez getting Most Improved and Kelcey Simpson getting Most Valuable.
