Hawks win Bird Battle

In a game typically played under the lights of the Mount Si stadium, the Chief Kanim varsity football team defeated the unbeaten Snoqualmie Middle School Eagles 22-8 and propelled its unbeaten record to 6-0 for the season.

Chief Kanim had the ball first but was shut down by the Eagle defense and forced to punt. Snoqualmie marched down the field and scored a touchdown on the shocked Hawk defense.

The Hawks rallied and recovered a fumble. Joey Evans did the rest. Evans scored two touchdowns on runs of 43 and 15 yards in the second quarter and the Hawks led at halftime, 16-8.

In the second half, the Hawks defense stiffened and picked up a couple more turnovers. Evans again scored and the Hawks led 22-8. The clock ran out on the Eagles and Chief Kanim finished the season unblemished at 6-0, winning the Foothills League Championship.

The Hawks had no turnovers and only one penalty. Tyson Riley played a great game at quarterback and defensive end. On defense, Riley and Zack Brevik recovered fumbles and Stu Hallock and Zack Kirschmeyer had interceptions. Morgan Jordan played in Snoqualmie’s backfield all afternoon, recording 10 tackles, several for losses. The coaches are very proud of the effort of this team. They are a class bunch of athletes and deserve this championship.

Eagles have a great season

The Snoqualmie Middle School Eagles cross country team has officially ended it season with the coaches proud of its many accomplishments. The final three meets were against Beaver Lake at home, Tolt at Tolt Middle School and the league finals at Lake Sammamish State Park.

The Eagles ran hard against Beaver Lake but came up short for the sixth-grade girls and seventh- and eighth-grade boys and girls. Alex Rudd came in second for the lady Eagles with Danielle Crabtree in third place. Dannah Parsons and Alexis Pearlstein came in fifth and sixth for the sixth-grade Lady Eagles and Izabel Rader came in ninth.

The sixth-grade boys won their match with Eric Baumgardner taking second, Dustin Breshears third, Nate Chase fourth, Taylor Mitchell fifth, Eythan Frost eighth and Carter Williamson tenth.

Next, the Eagles traveled to Tolt where the sixth-grade boys once again came out on top with Baumgardner taking first place, Chase second, Breshears third and Taylor Mitchell tenth.

For the sixth-grade girls Parsons came in third, Pearlstein in eighth and Rader tenth. For the seventh- and eighth-grade boys team Andrew Klausing came in second and Brett Duncan third.

On the seventh- and eighth-grade girls team, Megan Past came in third, Rudd fourth, Crabtree fifth, Alix Crandell sixth and Nikki Buzzell 10th.

At the league finals the Eagles came into their own with the sixth-grade boys taking fourth, the sixth-grade girls also taking fourth and the seventh-and eighth-grade girls taking fourth.

Personal-best times were achieved by Devin Aberle, Chase Adams, Alex Anderson, Baumgardner, who took second, Buzzell, Chase, Danielle Clark, Crandell, Kaylin Dahms, Brett Duncan, Eythan Frost, Klausing, Matthew Lynne, Alyssa Melin, Parsons, who took 10th, Megan Past, Pearlstein, who took ninth, Matt Prewett, Rader, Alex Rudd, Ryan Simpson and Carter Williamson.

The following runners were recognized for their accomplishments. Most Improved: Taylor Mitchell and Nikki Buzzell; Most Valuable Runner: Dannah Parsons, Megan Past and Eric Baumgardner; Most Inspirational: Danielle Crabtree and Andrew Klausing and coaches’ award went to Alex Rudd, Matthew Lynne and Devin Aberle. The most pizza consumed at the party award went to Crabtree who ate 12 pieces.

Hawks win nail-biter

The Chief Kanim Middle School seventh-grade football team won a close game last week as it beat Snoqualmie Middle School 14-7 in the season finale.

Both teams’ defenses controlled the first half as they headed to the locker room with a scoreless game at halftime. The second half of the game started out the same as Chris Hindmarch and Aaron Moutului led an aggressive Hawk defense in shutting down the Eagles.

Offensively, the Hawks started clicking led by Tyler Ostby’s slant passes to Lucas Zupan, Moutului’s tough blast up the middle and Tanner Riley’s scampers around the corner. Riley finally got the Hawks on the board with a 15-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter.

The Eagles were not finished though, as they scored on a 60-yard touchdown run to take a 7-6 lead. With 2:14 left in the game, Ostby led the Hawks down the field on what is known as “The Drive.” Ostby hit Riley for a 30-yard pass completion down to the Eagles 1-yard line. Moutului then scored on a one-yard touchdown blast up the middle to make the score 14-7.

Frank Tassarra sealed the win with an interception to ice the game. The Hawks finished the season 5-1 and are league champions.

Riley had 15 carries for 150 yards including a touchdown. Ostby went 6-for-9 passing for 103 yards and Moutului had seven carries for 51 yards including a touchdown. He added four tackles for the defense. Zupan had four catches for 53 yards and teammate Evan Ellington had one catch for 30 yards. Hindmarch wrapped up the defense with four tackles.

Eagles wind up season

The Snoqualmie Middle School eighth-grade volleyball team completed their season recently in a close game against Chief Kanim Middle School. The Lady Eagles took home some great wins this season, including those against Maywood and Tolt. The team showed tremendous improvement throughout the season. Coach Lindsey Ratcliffe is very proud of the girls’ effort and enthusiasm. She would like to give a special thanks to each of the girls and wish them luck with their sports careers next year in high school: Meagan Welcome, Cortney Tubbs, Brittney Conway, Laura Slover, Karina Mitchell, Christina Carlton, Shelby Martin, Leah Wiley, Erin Proctor, Rachel Nyberg, and Ashna Calabro. Also, coach Ratcliffe would like to thank the parents for all their support this fall.
