Girls stand tall in league soccer play
The Snoqualmie Middle School’s Lady Eagles soccer program ended the year with a 4-1 victory over Chief Kanim in “The Battle of the Birds” match. Mariana Zanella and Kirsten Mills both sparked the attack and knocked in a couple golden goals. Zanella and Mills ended the season with 10 goals each. Coach Brown was most impressed by the way the younger girls stepped up and played sound defense.
Katie Hogan, Kara Clearman, Emily Mills, Kelsey Parsons and Becky Wada all were containing the dangerous attack of Kanim with precise marking. Jessica Oliver was huge in the center midfield position (just learning the new spot a week before game time) and Veronica Cerda put on a clinic with her athletic ability and leadership.
The Eagles finished the year scoring 35 goals and allowing only 13 to be put in their net. The team carried 18 players on their roster and have eight returning next year. Brown commented, “We are losing some key players such as Oliver, Mills, and Cerda, but we have a strong class coming in and my returning players will be prepared and ready to take the next step.” Brown will expect Zanella and Clearman to both take over where Mills and Cerda left off. “The leadership that they carried on this team was crucial for the success and make up of this team. They fulfilled every expectation that I had of them.”
