Hawks racking up the wins
Beaver Lake had no idea what hit it last week as it was steamrolled by the Chief Kanim boys’ seventh-grade varsity basketball team 51-20.
Using an aggressive defense, the Hawks swept the season series.
Leading the effort for the Hawks was Brandon Yakabowski with 11 points and six steals. Bret Handy had 10 points and three steals. Tommy Abbott had nine points, 10 rebounds and four blocks. Nick Johnston had eight points, 10 rebounds and three blocks, Miles Whitaker had five points and two assists, Sean Bothell had five points and three steals, Tanner Ostby had three points and two rebounds, Keegan Riley had two points and three assists and Bryce MacEwan had two rebounds and two steals.
Eighth-grade still unbeaten
The Chief Kanim Hawks boys’ eighth-grade junior-varsity basketball team stretched its winning streak to seven with a win over rival Snoqualmie Middle School 56-49 in the Battle of the Birds.
The Hawks jumped ahead early, leading 38-19 at the half, but the Eagles soared back and came within five. That was as close as they came and the Hawks notched another win.
“We had some outstanding play from several individuals,” said Hawks coach Dick Kirby. “Jud Sanders and Tim Coleman were hot shooters. Kirk Strandjord and Daniel Lee played oustanding defense, while Brandon Reaves cleaned up on the boards.”
Scoring for the Hawks were Ryan Baasch with two, Coleman with 22, Lee with two, Reaves with four and Sanders with 26.
Also playing a big roal in the win but not scoring were Tod Berkebile, Ian Falconer, Strandjord and Eric Molnar.
Sanders added eight assists and eight steals, while teammate Reaves pulled down 11 rebounds. Strandjord also contributed five blocked shots. One more game with rival SMS takes place this week.
Eagles lose nail biter
As is only fitting for two in-district rivals, the seventh-grade boys’ junior-varsity basketball game came down to the final minutes of play, with Chief Kanim outlasting the Eagles of Snoqualmie Middle School 37-33.
Both teams exploited each other’s defense in the first quarter, with the Eagles’ Derrick Perez, Tom Perry, Zach Grigsby, Michael Smart and Ben Price connecting for a combined 15 points. But the defense improved in the second quarter, as SMS’s Kelson Carr and Mike Martinell put the clamps on their opponent’s guards.
Tom Perry led the way for the Eagles with 12 points, Derrick Perez finished with six and Adam Dalman banked in another four. The best offensive player of the game award went to Perez, with Carr getting best defensive player for the Eagles. Most improved was Price, while Martinell was awarded most inspirational.
Kanim outlasts Maywood
The Chief Kanim Hawks boys’ seventh-grade varsity basketball team pounded Maywood last week 75-32. The Hawks put the clamps on visiting Maywood with a suffocating defense and effective offense to sweep the season series. The Hawks jumped out early and kept the pressure on the entire game.
Leading the effort was Brandon Yakabowski with 21 points and three steals. Tommy Abbott had 15 points, six rebounds and four blocks. Bret Handy had nine points and five steals. Miles Whitaker had 11 points and one steal. Tanner Ostby had six points and two assists. Nick Johnston had four points and two rebounds. Sean Bothell had four points and six rebounds. Keegan Riley had five points and two assists, and Bryce MacEwan had one assist and played excellent defense.
The Hawks are now 9-0 and finish up the season Thursday, April 4, at Mount Si High School for the annual Battle of the Birds game against Snoqualmie Middle School.
Hawks claim victory
The Chief Kanim boys’ eighth-grade varsity basketball team traveled to Maywood Middle School recently and claimed a 62-52 victory.
Maywood put up a fight, but the Hawks put its fast-break offense into high gear to seal the win. Leading the team was Nick Dietsch with 16 points while playing solid defense defense. Tyler Littlejohn had 15 points, 12 rebounds and four blocked shots. Erik Alexander had 14 points, nine rebounds and eight steals. Gregg Beckmann had 13 points. Stu Trombley had seven points and six steals. Eric Forslin had two points, and Remo Castagno, Dane Fenton and Cory Lindberg contributed to the defensive effort.
Chief Kanim gets past Tolt
A scrappy Tolt Middle School team gave the Chief Kanim boys’ varsity basketball team a scare recently, but then the offense kicked in and the Hawks pulled away with the 82-47 win.
The Hawks led by only 12 at half-time, but came out flying in the second half. Leading the Hawks was Nick Dietsch with 20 points and five steals. Remo Castagno had 13 points and six steals. Tyler Littlejohn had 11 points and eight rebounds. Erik Alexander had eight points, seven rebounds and five steals. Cory Lindberg had six points. Stu Trombley, Gregg Beckmann and Eric Forslin each contributed with four points and Dane Fenton recorded one point and three steals.
Beaver Lake falls to Hawks
The Chief Kanim boys’ varsity eighth-grade basketball team took on Beaver Lake on the Hawks’ home court and walked away with a 87-52 win.
Stu Trombley had 18 points. Nick Dietsch had 16 points. Tyler Littlejohn contributed 15 points, 18 rebounds, six assists and four blocks. Erik Alexander had 10 points and 10 rebounds. Corey Lindberg had 10 points. Gregg Beckmann had nine points. Eric Forslin had four points and Remo Castagno and Dane Fenton each recorded two points.
Maywood downs Hawks
The Chief Kanim boys’ eighth-grade varsity basketball team played an aggressive Maywood team recently, losing a close one 66-65.
After a very cold start to the game, the Hawks heated up but were never able to pull away. Chief Kanim was led by Remo Castagno with 27 points and four steals. Nick Dietsch had 11 points. Erik Alexander recorded eight points and 15 rebounds. Eric Forslin had eight points. Stu Trombley had four points. Corey Lindberg, Gregg Beckmann and Ryan Reilly each recorded two. Dane Fenton played great defense.
