Knights get last laugh

In the first meeting between the two teams since last season’s controversial playoff game, Newport used a 44-14 scoring outburst during the second and third quarters to hammer the Mount Si Wildcats 61-44 in Kingco 3A girls’ basketball action last week at Newport High School in Bellevue.

Senior guard Jenny Jensen led all scorers with 15 points for the Knights, while sophomore guard Whitney Beyerlin scored 12 to lead Mount Si. Senior post Kira Hollenbeck poured in 10 points for Newport, while Rachel Travis pitched in 11 to help the Wildcats in a losing cause.

It was a tough night for Mount Si as turnovers and missed chances hurt the Wildcats.

“This was not one of our better shooting nights, and we’ve got some girls playing that found themselves in a dogfight for the first time this year . . . we’ll play better next time we get ourselves into a situation like this,” said Wildcats’ coach Dirk Hansen.

Hansen applauded his team’s effort, but also offered praise for the Knights.

“We played hard the whole night. I give a lot of credit to Newport, man. They shot the ball well, they play hard and [they’ve] got a lot of senior talent. The group [is] well polished. They’ve been together for a long time.” he said.
