Mercer Island scored early, then took control of the game and rolled on to a 2-0 shutout of Mount Si in KingCo 3A girls’ varsity soccer action last Tuesday, Oct. 8, at Mount Si High School.
The Wildcats did have their chances, especially in the second half, but the Islanders pretty much controlled the flow of the game, playing much of it in the Wildcats’ end.
“They let us in, the momentum changed and we were able to attack a few times. But Mercer Island is a very good club,” said Mount Si coach Bruce Caldwell. “They have some good athletes, and they’re obviously well-skilled and they’re confident.”
The scoring began in the third minute of play as the Islanders’ Rebecca Conte took a pass from teammate Beth Richards and one-timed it off her foot past Mount Si goalkeeper Kristen Travis to put the Islanders up 1-0.
The Islanders continued to pressure the Mount Si defense, and the Wildcats could not break it until the 23rd minute, when Mount Si’s Kristen Berndt picked up the Wildcats’ first major scoring chance of the game.
Ten minutes after that chance she ripped a shot that was deflected away from the net at the last second by Islanders goalkeeper Caity Connelly.
Berndt, back after a one-game absence due to a concussion she suffered in the second half of Mount Si’s 1-0 win over Newport two weeks ago, played well.
