Gymnasts post first win

Colorful, encouraging signs were posted on the bleachers
of the Mount Si High School gymnasium last Thursday night to
say good luck and goodbye to the Wildcats’ senior
gymnasts, Lindsey Ray and Cortney Schuller. Although the
team’s meet against the Liberty Patriots and the Interlake Saints
marked its final competition of the year, it was the teams’ first win
against another team since its formation last year by coach Renee Tredo.
Tredo was very excited that her team beat Interlake, but
the `Cats couldn’t garner a win for their season record, losing to
the Patriots. The gymnasts end their season with a record of 0-7.
At the last meet of her high-school career, Ray said she
just wanted to “have fun and not worry about anything.”
It turned out Ray had very little to worry about. Her last
meet was highlighted by a score of 8.0 on the vault, only 0.1 points
below the second-highest score of her career in this event. Ray
also scored impressively in three other events, posting a 7.85 on
bars, followed by an 8.0 on beam and an energetic floor exercise
that earned her an 8.65. Ray’s accumulated 32.5 points won her
the all-around award at the meet.
Schuller echoed Ray about competing for the last time. “I
just want to be satisfied with the job that I do in our last league
meet,” she said. She scored a 7.2 on vault, followed by a 4.0 on
the balance beam, which seemed to act more like a bucking
horse. Schuller managed to get back on the beam after several falls
and finished her routine with her head held high. After that, she
focused her concentration on the floor exercise and redeemed
herself with a score of 7.8.
Merritt Kott, freshman, garnered a fourth place on vault
and a sixth place on beam. Lauren Paulus, freshman, placed fifth
on vault and third on bars. Paulus also brought home another
all-around award for the team, taking sixth place. Jess Sanford, also
a freshman, placed sixth in the floor exercise.
